greetings all. I've been working on a summary of available fueling boxes. posted this over on the DTR as well. The text narrative is below. The image size restrictions of this board prevent me from posting a readable copy of the comparative matrix. You can find that matrix here

on edit: check the above source for the latest copy of the matrix, organized for better clarity and corrections (I had the volumizer mis-categorized as a pressure port box. it is a pressure/timing box)

Fueling box summary

03-04 HPCR

Revision 3/5/04: this is a work in progress

Dleno

“Pressure port” boxes appear to work by introducing analog error into the pressure feedback loop to the ECM. The ECM thinks fuel pressure is low, and compensates by increasing fuel pressure, injector pulse width, and small amounts timing advance. Boxes of this genre hook up to the MAP sensor and fuel pressure port. What differentiates boxes in this category is how the mfg relates fuel pressure to measured boost. Some make power come in earlier than others. Available boxes are all in the ~100 HP region for the 305 HP Cummins, and include EZ, Ramifier, Quadzilla, and Torque Dog Plus. Most mfgs will not reveal max pressure achieved by the box, but it is generally believed to be in the ~27,000 psi region to obtain 100 HP gain on a 305 HP engine.

"ECM" boxes appear to work by intercepting digital ECM commands themselves to control fuel pressure -- and perhaps injection timing and duration as well I don’t know. I know very little about these boxes currently, except to note that they connect only to the 60 pin ECM harness. Van Aaken (65 HP claim) is the only ECM box I know of. The web site states that they increase fuel pressure.

"Pressure/Timing” boxes work by raising fuel pressure like a pressure box does, but also add additional timing control via direct connection to the crank and/or cam sensor. Approximately 30-40HP is available via timing alone without additional fuel. With the exit of the Bullydog pressure/timing box from the market, There are two boxes that I know of in this category. One is the new Banks six gun, at 126 HP/290 ft lbs. This box connects to the MAP sensor, fuel pressure port, crank sensor, and taps into a wire on the transmission solenoid, and one on the ECM harness. The Banks box also adds some fancy drive train slip detection and EGT based de-fueling. 105 HP and 258 ft lbs. of torque is available without raising fuel pressure above 24,500 psi. The other box is the Motoblue Volumizer (100HP), connecting to MAP sensor, fuel pressure port, crank sensor, and cam sensor. The fact that this box makes 100 HP with direct timing control suggests that its maximum fuel pressure may be less than the 100 HP pressure port boxes.

"Direct timing and duration" boxes work by connecting directly to cam and/or crank sensors (like the pressure/timing boxes) but do not connect to the fuel pressure port and do not raise fuel pressure above the stock value of 23,000 psi. They control injector pulse width by connecting directly to the injector, lengthening the pulse width beyond the capability of the ECM. Currently, TST is the only box in this category, achieving 150 HP and 500 ft. lbs of torque without raising fuel pressure. The box includes a boost gauge, EGT gauge, and performs EGT based de-fueling.

I edited the original post to correct my categorization of the volumizer. any comments and corrections are welcome.

Anyone have first hand experience with the Edge EZ vs. the Volumizer? I thought the EZ was the best for a sub $500 box, but it looks like the Volumizer might be a better choice, I would like the in-cab control.

I was talking to Banks today about their box and they say you will get less of an increase with the HO than the SO. Their numbers are also with exhaust, intake and big head waste gate actuator. Be warned that you wont get their maximum advertised output from your HO. Especially if if you haven't made any other changes to you truck.

I think most are rating the so,aren't they?as for one over the other,a local shop thats very reputable recommends the volumizer over the ez. I had the comp on my 01 and 02 so it was clear choice for me.

The numbers game is a wild and crazy one. Some rate the SO, some confuse "best gain" numbers with "peak-to-peak" numbers, etc. I'm trying to sort all of that out on my comparative matrix. I hope to have an update on Monday. cheers --Doug

I have never had the edge, but I am very happy with the Volumizer... . have about 15,000 miles with it... . love the performance, the on the fly switch, the increase in fuel milage, and never any codes set. :)

Its true that the Volumizer is the only timing box out there now that is not setting codes (well, Banks may not be; I just don't know what to make of their numbers since they are taken from an SO engine "with recommended airflow improvements). I'm trying to find out more about this box (torque curves coming via email but not arrived yet... ) but it seems that they might not have to raise pressure as high as the other pressure boxes. We know that 30-40 HP is available via timing alone, and PDQ told me that the highest peak HP gain is 85 to the rear wheels. If all of that proves to be true, then they may be under 25,000 psi fuel pressure in my opinion. I think it takes in the 26000-27000 psi region to make 100 HP with a pressure box.

I would like some feedback about fuel economy improvements especially while towing. With prices aproaching 2 bucks a gallon I'm sue I'm not the only one... .....

DLeno,

Thanks for the great info. Please post the HP/torque curves from PDQ when you get them.

I agree with Bertram65, the Volumizer appears to be a better choice for a light bomb application than the EZ. I wonder why it is not more widely used. I had an EZ on my 2001, but want to investigate the Volumizer more before buying a box for my 2003.

Thanks for all of your input Elite1, does anyone else run the Volumizer and like or dislike it?

Carl

It's not true that the volumizer is the only one not setting codes.

I have the Quadzilla box on my 04 for almost a month now and it's not set one code. Timing and Fueling, 140 horsepower.

Chris

Discussion of the Volumizer is relatively recent. Who makes it and where do you get them? How do they compare to the EZ?

Chris, you're right but the reason "no codes from volumizer" is of interest in the "codes" discussion is because it is a timing box. timing boxes are notorious for setting a crank position code -- believed to be due to some buggy software in the ECM.

There have been four timing box attempts that I am aware of:

Bullydog was the first to market. their pressure/timing box was pulled from the market due to the codes issue. you can still get it, but you have to agree that you understand what it might do.

Edge is/was working on a duration/timing box, and they were hitting the same codes issue. They've gone silent now, presumedly so they don't set any expectations in the market. Who knows they may have gone back to the drawing board and persued some other technique entirely.

TST is currently on the market and some percentage of trucks are found to set the crank position code at random times with no correlation to driving or engine operating conditions.

Volumizer is a pressure/timing box (like the Bullydog) but I don't hear people setting codes with this one.

None of what I'm calling "pressure port" boxes out there set codes, because the don't do timing. Boxes like the Ramifier, EZ, Quadzilla...

the volumizer is made by PDQ.

check out the latest version of my comparative matrix Here .

I'm also building an email distribution list. if you pm me with your email address I'll send out a copy of the original . doc.

opps. sorry I double posted... .

Hi I just sent out an updated fueling box summary with a more meaninful (I hope) way of expressing the HP/TQ numbers and new information from Volumizer. see it here or pm me with you email address.

Thanks Doug. Any idea how much a Volumizer is? It's not listed on their website.

Anyone actually compare it to an EZ?
