MPG Decrease @ 13k - why?

inexpensive power upgrade for '04?

whitch of the fueling boxes bring on the power at the lowest rpm? i have a bully dog right now and it doesnt add any power until i hit about 2200 rpm an thats just too late for me

I just ordered my Van Aaken C3 Smart Box, its only 65hp and 200tq but I have an auto to be concerned about.

It caters to the towing crowd so comes in low. I hear they are working on a 135hp box that is pulse width.

I'm very happy with my Edge. If memory serves me the torque is almost at peak at 1700 RPM. Horsepower doesn't peak until around 2700 RPM, but this box is very tow friendly.

With over 14,000 lbs in tow I will pull really well in the 1800-2000 RPM range. I rarely need to drop out of sixth gear, but on big grades I'll drop into fifth and pull at 2500 RPM. You should see the looks as I pull my 37' fifth wheel up the big hills at 60 MPH. I can hammer down and hit almost seventy, but EGT's get too high.

I can't say anything bad about the Edge except that it has almost too much power when driving solo in poor weather. In the winter if I'm not pulling I take the box off.

Matt,

Keep us posted on that VA Smartbox. The only time I'm not happy with the power my truck makes is when towing in the hills and the rpms are under 2000. It needs just a little help there.

TIA

TST without question, then Ramifer and VA. VA and Ramifier are hard to distinguish because there is no comparable dyno data. In the lack of objective data My guess is that these two are equivalent in terms of how early the power comes in (read how sensitive the throttle is).

If you are up to some reading there is an 8 page discussion here that sheds some light on the VA. One of their vendors posted power results on it.

I too want just a tad more when towing and don't want to damage the auto so am going to give it a try.

yea, the VA is very mild. probably the most mild of any of the boxes out there. hard to beat this one but you can do it with a TST on level 1 (timing only) or 2 (about 60 HP).

Read the VA power numbers carefully -- its a great mild box for towing. they deliberately calm it down at the high rpms to keep EGTs in check, and still give respectable torque gains in the drivability range. It pulls about 25% harder than stock throughout a broad RPM range and gives small (~ 30 HP) gain over stock peak HP.

I don't even own a TST but all this talk about mild boxes and fuel economy make me wonder what is so hard about setting up the TST for lower power settings and then leaving it alone? There isn't a box on the planet that can beat it in any performance category you want. Maybe guys want something near trivial to install. That and a lot of guys are apparently still nervous about the codes

I'm pulling 13K 5er plus another 1K behind. EZ fuel only box knocked 2 seconds off a 20-65 roll-on in 3-4 gears. Greatest driving difference is pulling hills - almost never have to drop out of 6th unless I'm totally asleep at the bottom. Just a tickle of the throttle and it will ease up, even accellerate gently without going over 1200 degrees.

Thats me but I don't sweat the install, its the ease of un-install that I want just in case we break down and need to be towed I can unplug that one real quick.

After the warranty is up any power mods will be more permanent.

An added feature is no codes have been reported on the VA and while its a simple fault clear for me at the shop I just don't want the light on at all.

It came in today but won't go on till the weekend cuz Thurs is recall day at the Dealer.

Had to open up the box and take a look anyway and found all wiring, connectors and such very first class with weather proof seals and pin numbers on the 60 way connector.

Has 12 month warranty, web site, email and phone numbers printed in the manual and on the product.

It has a 3 way switch for off, 50% and 100% and it will default to 100% if you don't want to use the in-cab switch.

I noticed that they monitor vehicle speed on that 60 pin connector and of course connect to MAP and FP signals.

Referencing MAP with Vehicle Speed I would bet helps the VA determine specific loads on the motor.

:) --> van Aaken <-- :)

After reading the long discussion on DTR the vA box seems the most sophisticated to me of all the ones I'm familiar with (except for the TST). I have had van Aaken stuff before and I think they're more on top of the game than some of the most popular box makers on TDR. They're definitely underrated.

Don't let the seemingly-weak mak HP numbers fool you, this thing fattens up the "area under the curve" at lower RPM where you're running most of the time, and certainly doesn't stress the fuel system with as high of pressures as most of the other boxes available.

They haven't fooled me a bit. if you look at the numbers carefully, you can tell that the VA pulling power in the towing rpm region has been optimized, and that both EGTs and fuel pressures have been kept down. As I say, this is a towing box as opposed to a dyno day box.

Also, the only data I have from Ted and that is for a 600. I'd expect the 305 engine to do a bit better. Even so, there are other boxes, namely the Ramifier, that have an even fatter area under the curve. As I read between the numbers so to speak, I'd suggest that the ramifier would have more of an EGT issue if you use all of its low end torque. no free lunch.

Don't let VA fool you too much about being on their game. VA is personally responsible for everyone, starting with the DMAX crowd, being scared to death of rail pressure. Then their warranty sucks, what are you going to do about it, they are in England. They had more problems and glitches than you could ever imagine.

Now they have a new Dmax box and it has become worthless because of all the failures. Check e-bay or the GM sites. The run ok, but poor quality is why they are selling for 1/2 what they used to.

Their 6L Ford box is so bad that they pulled it from the market. What does that say?

Stick to American made stuff.

A question: will the VA box cause or give rise to 48RE trouble? My concern is more with the transmission than with the fuel system. Right now, I am stock but am interested in the boost in tq/hp at the 2000 rpm point where I tow most.

Another interesting note is the very few VA stuff on Ebay compared to the others so either owners keep the product or there isn't that much of VA out there.

Just looking at the numbers I'd say the VA is the best positioned of all the blind pressure boxes regarding drivetrain protection. I say "blind" in the sense that there is no auto de-fueling capability there.

the thing pulls only 26% harder than stock through the pulling rpm range (600), and develops only 30 HP more than the highest stock HP at WOT (also 600). This tells me that fuel pressures are moderate, power gains are moderate, EGTs will be the best of all the blind boxes, and the smallest power train risk in terms of stress due to torque (torque is the killer of drivetrains)

the only way to do better is to automate the drivetrain protection as Banks has done. I've never used the Banks so I can't comment on how WELL they implimented their marketing features, but when you think about the stock automatic, you gotta agree that they've done their homework and have carved out a niche where nobody else is playing (except perhaps for edge we'll see how that turns out).

Where the VA shines is install simplicity, moderate power, and not very much drivetrain stress. I'd probably go for this one if I had an automatic. I'd probably try the Banks, but the price is very high in terms of install complexity and I'd want something easy to remove. The Banks leaves an irreversable footprint (wire taps). I'm also a rather simple guy and the sheer complexity and brain power on the Banks box is not something that immediately attracts me. But it targets the auto crowd thats for sure.
