I finally installed and used the drain plug. So clean. Does the plug trap any oil above it? Does anyone remove the plug at the end to drain the rest? That would pretty much negate the benefits.



Anone find the perfect container to drain into?





It ws my cleanest oil change ever, but a short, lidded bucket bucket would be nice.

I use the buckets that our laundry detergent comes in. We get it at Costco. Used to be 5 gallon, then got smaller, now it's rectangular! I can get the 5 gallon under the truck. Makes it easy. Maybe a Homer bucket from Home Depot.

I use a 5gallon gas can that I use for my waste oil. fits under truck and with a tube runs the oil right into the can for transport to the oil recycling.



I think that the plug does trap some oil above it as there is a "flange" in the pan plug hole that extendes up aprox 1/2 inch to provide longer thread area for the stock plug. The flange has ports cut in it so that the all the oil can come out when the plug is removed, but I think that the fugimoto plug covers the ports. Iam not sure how much oil would be left behind, but have heard about 1qt stated somewhere here on TDR.

You can also (very carefully!) drill holes in the threaded part of your plug. Feel in the pan where the threads stop and see where the ports are. Drill three or four small holes in the plug to match. There is a thread on here somewhere about it.

AMink is correct, there is an old thread regarding modifying (or blue-printing if you will) the Fumoto valve. I used a Dremmel Tool with the little cutting wheel and carefully cut slots in the appropriate locations along the thread chases. Treat it like a jewelry-job and it will evacuate the lower portion of the pan quite well.

Ktty litter comes in great containers; rectanglar with lid too. Great for oil changes. I even put the used litter into an old container, then during oil change, I drain the oil into the container with the used litter. Now, if I only had the hair to light it off!! Phew!!

I removed my plug after oil drain and there was about two cups left.

I just did my second oil change on my 06 and installed one of these plugs. I had one on my 97. Before I put it in, I felt around the threads in the pan. I couldn't feel, or see, any slots like in my 97. Maybe the newer trucks don't have those slots. Or maybe I missed them. Either way, it's a lot easier and cleaner to drain this way. Then I can remove the drain and get the last little bit.
