Ok I did some searching first and read all that I could find about a fuel pressure gauge on a 12v. My question is wouldn't using a fuel pressure gauge occasionally be adequate to check the helth of the fuel system and lift pump?

I understand that the gauge will let me know when the filter becomes contaminated, but with regular filter maintence and good fuel, I don't think that is all that important. I emailed Ted J. on the topic and his response was to check it occasionally.

Don't get me wrong I like gauges, but I'm trying to decide if I want a full time fuel pressure gauge or not. I was just hoping for some of your input.

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan,

I think if you go to the trouble of installing a fuel pressure gauge, you might as well make it full time. Besides, you want to know what your pressure is at different throttle "settings". If your lift pump is not providing adequate pressure at all speeds you will want to know that.

I just ordered a 0-30psi gauge for my engine. I intend to drill the injection pump banjo bolt to mount the sending unit.

I have one in my truck and it let me know when the power went away why it went. Fuel pressure down to 5 lbs when it should be 25. I also drilled and tapped the banjo bolt on the injection pump and used a VDO oil pressure gauge I had laying around (electric) and it worked great, I recomend a full time gauge unless you dont want the extra gauge in the cab. I used that goofy square hole in the dash to mount mine, used a piece of plexiglass with the hole cut in it and glued it to the back of the panel and painted it flat black and it looks factory.

It seems that the need for a full time fuel pressure gauge is much higher for 24v than 12v trucks. On the 24v trucks the injection pump is both cooled and lubricated by fuel, on the 12v trucks it's cooled and lubricated by oil. It also seems that the 12v trucks have driveability problems when they have lift pump problems and the 24v trucks don't have driveability problems until the lift pumps are VERY bad - considering that the injection pump is cooled and lubricated by fuel on the 24v trucks that is a big concern. JMHO - and why I put a gauge on my truck.
