I'm confused. How can the oil drain past the threaded area with the plug screwed in place. It would seem that drilling the holes just above the gasket would not work. I drilled mine half way up the threads on an older model after I found I could drain almost half a quart extra after removing the plug.

Might your diagram be upside down?

Lee,

No, the diagram is not wrong. There are no threads at the bottom of the pan, they are above the baffle. The baffle is at the bottom of the pan as shown in the drawing. The majority of the oil drains thru the hole in the top of the Fumoto drain plug, however, once the oil gets to the level of the top of the Fumoto Drain plug, there is no way of draining the rest of the oil unless 1. ) you remove the Fumoto drain plug completely like you would the stock drain plug or 2. ) you drill the holes just above the gasket to allow the oil to drain thru the baffle and out the holes you drilled in the Fumoto drain plug.

Next time you take your drain plug out, get a flashlight, wipe the oil off, and look up into the hole, you will see what I'm talking about.

I think CTD designed the pan this way to allow all of the oil to drain with the stock plug removed. This way the height of the threads do not effect the draining of the oil.

Well Tom... it don't look too pretty but then again neither do I and my girl will still be seen in public with me. ;) If you are off roading and a rock ever gets that off, it's because you've just sheared off the bottom of the oil pan and the oil valve will be the least of your worries. Thanks for postin' the picture.

P. S. You're truck almost looks as good as mine. ;)

Been using mine

since Dec 99 and just added 2 extra gaskets to get the drop and handle to point backwards. Been off-roading (chasing ballons) and never had any problem yet (2wd). Have "launched" over rocks, dips etc. Took it out once to see about draining and didn't get enough for me to be worried about. Must be to old style as got it at Glen Thomas's back in 99. Never drilled the holes but probably should - around 90k on it.

SOTSU!!

EDIT - PS: makes it easy to get sample, drain a little, shut-off, get sample, re-open and get sample read to mail - have drink or ... ... Never had a miss (to the pan) or wind blow the oil around with it.
