Trans Fried - previously-Funky 1-2 shift & kick down engagement

Sorry for the long post - in the almost 5 years I've been a member I've never had to really use the 911 section - only tried to help others - now it's my turn.

I changed the trans fluid last weekend and adjusted the bands per Dodge shop manual - outside adjustment: 72 in lb, then back off 1-7/8 turns, inside adjustment: 72 in lb then back off 3 turns. Of course locking the lock nuts afterwards. I've seen some conflicting info on the TDR some saying back off both 2 full turns - I stick to the book - any ideas?

I've done this before on this truck some 20+ thousand miles ago and then after I first purchased (75k miles) and all has always been well. Matter of fact all was well with the trans until I changed the fluid, filter and adjusted the bands - silly me fixing something that wasn't broken - however I believe in normal maintenance. I used ATF+3 as specified every time I changed fluid and new filter. I clean the pan inside each time I change the filter.

So the "funky" 1-2 shift is only experienced during low throttle shift or when you start out and have to let up due to some non-signaling turner in front of you. The only way I can explain the shift is . . . it's like a manual when you let off the clutch too soon and the gear is "almost" in then goes in - kind of like a bump or thud.

Also, the "funky" kickdown engagement is best explained . . . 15 - 20 mph and then punch it - there's an increase in rpm then after engagement the rpm drops to what sounds normal for kick down.

Any help would be appreciated, getting ready to do the Keywest, FL thing this Friday. I re-adjusted the outside adjustment yesterday - no change. I removed the drain pan plug before calling it a night yesterday and plan to check the inside adjustment today. HELP. Oh yea, I've never adjusted the throttle cable settings on the VB since I've owned it - should I leave well enough alone or could this (and the recent band adjustment) be contributing.

The attached pictures are the findings after removing pan this AM. Looks like we'll be taking the XC70 to Keywest this year. I'll be puting it back together and driving it the rest of the week. I'm hoping someone can recommend a place that can install a known name perf trans while we are away for two weeks - we're going 76W from Bristol, PA to 81S (around Harrisburg) where we will go south and pick up 64E around Charlotteville (missing DC) and pick up 95S around Richmond. I'd hate to travel too far with a bad trans to a shop, I wish to drop off and pick up on way home from the Keys. I panl on posting this in the 2nd gen 24v eng & trans section.

All help is welcome - my weak link finall gave in. Once I get this fixed it's bombs away!

No idea about your problem. Try calling one of the transmission guys, most are very helpful.

I had my Goerend Brother's transmission shipped to me and had a local diesel shop do the install and I am very pleased. It is cheaper to send GB your transmission have it rebuilt and sent back but tha takes time. My transmission is really nice, can hold lots of power and did not break the bank.
