My new (well its a '95) RAM's fuel gauge has been very unreliable since I picked it up last week. After filling the tank, the highest the guage would go was 3/4. I've done about 150 easy miles and it bounces around from Empty to 1/4 to 1/2 to 3/4 at no apparent interval.

Do you think I should just replace the sender in the tank or is it worth my time to doubly check all the wiring first? I was thinking of putting in a 60gal transferflow tank which would require me to drop the tank, so if I need a new sender I figure that would be the time to put it in.

If I do need one, any idea what the cost of one would be?

The sending units are notoriously bad - It's probably the culprit. there's a meet tomorrow just south of you at MassDiesel. See the post in the local chapter section. I'm sure any of those guys can tell you what the best way is to check and change the unit.

My fuel gauge has been pretty much worthless for the past 3 years... in late '99 it began acting up just the way WebCrush described, and it's been downhill ever since. Now when I fill up, it will read close to full for about 30 miles, then it goes way below empty and stays there. I guess I just don't care enough to fix it;)
