Wow, this is an old switch...

Being in the Coast Guard, I hear of some interesting stories.

One of the best I've heard read was in Boating magazine a few years ago.

A captain was taking out his yacht alone and towing the dingy. As he was headed out to sea, he noticed the dingy had water in it and was swaying pretty bad since the water was collected in the forward part of the dingy in the deep v portion.

The captain decided to set the autopilot to avoid losing time, went to the swim platform and pulled the dingy up and jumped in to bail it out. The dingy began to sway worse so he moved to the stern. The boat settled down and he bailed it out.

However, when he went forward to pull himself back to his yacht, the dingy began to sway dangerously out of control so he crawled to to stern to settle it down again. This happened several times. With the autopilot on, the boat continued on its way out to sea.

After a considerable amount of time, the situation was getting very serious. The sun was going down and the captain was scared the situation was going to continue until the yacht ran out of fuel which was about 1400 miles from his origination.

Finally he managed to lay in the bottom of the boat and pull himself to the platform and get safely out of the dingy... ... ... ... lesson learned.

That's pretty good. The one pull starting the outboard reminded me of the craziest boating accident I've ever seen.

About 30 years ago I was at the lake, putting a boat in at the ramp, and there were two fellows there in an old covered bow v-hull with the wrap-around windshield and a pretty good sized outboard. They couldn't get it to fire and they had run the battery down and had resorted to pull starting it. They had the motor turned all the way to one side, the throttle to the stops, and in gear. On one pull she lit and immediately threw both the fellows out of the boat and continued to turn in a very tight turn until it took on enough water to sink her in about 6' of water. :-laf :-laf :-laf

A local boat repair shop (now former) employee took a customers 32' (or so) cabin cruiser out for an unauthorized trip one night. He brough along his buddy and their girlfriends. The cruised "up the river", about an hour and a half trip through 3 lakes and up the wolf river. After closing the bar they headed back. In the dark. The thief didn't know where he was. They ran ashore at a pretty good clip and landed in a corn field. The only injury was the thief's broken leg but since they didn't know where they were and didn't have any lights they waited until the sun came up to get help! The bar near where they came ashore has a picture from the local paper taken from the air, it's a good one.
