WARNING, Dont Try This At Home Kids

While i was at my parents house today, I stumbled across a picture of my first 8lb. Bluefish catch when I was 15yrs. at Ft. Fisher,NC.

The picture shows me grasping my thumb in pain, after I tried to thumb its lower lip like Bill Dance and discovered the TEETH!! It split my left thumb wide open!

I'll try to post a pic of it later. Anyone else done anything dumb like this while fishing?

This is a true fishing story. Close by my house there is a creek that flows out of a fish hatchery, teaming with fish. Fishing is only allowed for 10 year olds and younger. Took my daughter, who was then 6,down there for her first fishing experience. She was holding the pole while I put a salmon egg on the hook,as soon as I let go of the line a 18" steelhead jumped three feet out of the water and nailed the hook. I'll never forget the expression on my daughter's face when she was dragging that fish out saying,"Dad,I thought you're supposed to catch them in the water".

Fish stories. . Okay You asked for it. . I am a flathead catfish fishing nut using bank poles. A friend had the state record for a couple years so he has taught me alot especially going for the big ones starting out with single setups going up to triple setups in the fall. In May we usely start out using 4/0 hooks with bullgill or small bullheads and in the fall we are up to the 12/0 hooks and using 1. 5 lb bullheads for bait. We have had several 4/0 and 5/0 hooks straighten out like paper clips. Anyhow, this one fine warm morning we had several poles bouncing with fish on. We run the boat into the bank on the first pole no problem and had a nice 8 lb flathead. Next pole was when the fun really began. We park the boat like always and I knew it was a big fish buy the way the pole was bent. So I slowly start to pull and ease the fish to the top of the water. From the way the water was swirling I knew he was close to the top. So I ease the standard size fish net down to what I thought was under him and quickly raise it up. The fish didn't wiggle to much but there he was laying on top of the fish net. Looked like about 12 inches of fish hanging over each end of the fish net. Well I thought that maybe if I gently shook the net he might fall in. Well it didn't work quit that way and he come off the hook and made quite a splash. On the next pole it was about the same setup but this time the fish fell into the net. That one weighed 28 lb. We caught several fish that week but the next trip out we had the big 3ft net. No more of the fish hanging on the net thing for me...

There are other stories and these could go on and on. We won't talk about the time a snake fell in the boat. Thought the wife was going to outrun the Merc.

Another time we left the bait bucket with bluegill in it hang over the end of the boat over night. On the first pole went to reach into the bait bucket and found a snake in it. I always look in the bucket first now before grabbing what ever.

Had about a 30" snapping turtle in the boat once. The wife ended up sitting on top of the Merc while I was getting things under control.

If I don't have a wrench, a Dodge steering wheel, a beer, or a book in my hand, I prefer a fishing pole...
I outran a FlowerPoke once while pulling my bass boat home from Percy Priest Lake in Nashville, the look on his face (as described to me by my son) was priceless when he saw the boat pull even with the cab of his truck. But that's not a fishing story, per se... . so here's my favorite:
My buddy in Alabama got a new bass boat in 1985, a Stratos with a Mercury 150, at that time the best that money could buy. I'd gone shooting with him a few times (both NRA life members) but never fishing, and thought nothing of it when he brought along his . 357 Magnum. We were flippin' at a brush pile, up channel, in a tributary of Logan Martin Lake, and a water moccasin climbed in the boat with us. He put 6 holes in his new boat and missed the snake completely. I managed to get to the paddle and flipped it out of the boat. He had tears rolling down his face ALL the way back to Birmingham and home. He never invited me fishing again, even though I kept my mouth shut on the drive home !

Since I've been fishing since the age of about 5 I've got a bunch of stories. Fell out of the boat a couple of times. Wasps in the tree my new lure is stuck in. Boy they hate when you shake the limbs.
But, my favorite is when I caught a seagull in midflight. We were fishing Calcasieu Lake with a stong breeze. I cast a line with a i oz. weight on the end of it. Just as it was hitting the water a seagull flew between the line and the water. Of course his timing was just right and the line draped down on him and got wrapped up in his wings. I pulled it up to the boat and we sat here trying to figure out how we were going to unravel him. Man was he ticked. Those birds are MEAN when they're mad. It took 4 of us. Two holding the wings, one holding the towel over his head(my job) and one getting the line off of him. Luckliy everyone escaped injury including the bird. I did learn to start watching the skys when I cast though.

Lake Mead,NV-night-in a boat ---she gets a "bite", sets hook, makes the catch. Doesn't feel quite right, though. brings catch into lighted area near boat. It's a little black grebe, one of those mini-ducks that aren't worth a shotshell. He's all tangled, and scared. he'd also been completely submerged once or twice, so one of those stripers might have terrorized him a bit, too... . wellll i guess ya just hadta be there

Fishing on Fernan Lake last year. Caught a bass so big that when I pulled it in the boat the lake level dropped two inches.

The post about the seagull reminded me of this. It had to be 18 years ago my brother and one of his friends and I were fishing off a pier. My brother casts out his line and as the bait/sinker is arcing towards the water a seagull swoops down and eats the bait. I know it's not very PC, but it was funny as he!! watching my brother try and reel in that seagull. It was fighting and squawking and carrying on to beat all. Anyhow, we got it reeled in and were able to get the hook out of it fairly easily once we it calmed down a little. I guess it was fine afterwards, it flew off ok...

Hey Bill, I keep telling my wife to paint the "X" on the boat but she doesn't seem able to get the lid on off the "lead" based paint. Reminds me of the time the semi legals thought I was the DNR boys coming down the river. I had extra long fishing poles and them people thought they was antenna's. I still like jumping their wake and getting all wet in the other boat... Just another "Hang on Baby, We'z goin' fer another Ride">>>
