A friend here at work told me his recent story about his kdp. He went to see a hockey game in downtown Indianapolis. He got all the way to the 6th floor of a parking garage with his 98' 2500 4x4 and his fell out, rode the gears up and busted the top of his case under the belt idler pulley. Tore up the gears too. His was fixed under warranty.

Sad part was, the tow truck couldn't tow him inside there. He had to roll it down 6 levels with a lot of pushing at the ends of the ramps where its relatively flat. He said a couple of guys helped him. Otherwise he would have been there for good.

I've got a 1999 24V but I'm gonna check mine anyway. I've read here some of the older designed cases were still used during this time period. I'm betting I have one with a 11/98 build date.

Neil.

That's a good idea! I did my 96 12-valve but my 99 Freightliner is not done yet. Its actually Sept. 98 build date I assume the engine was built a small amount of time before the truck.

Call up Cummins or a Cummins dealer. Give them your engine ID info. They can tell you if you have the redesigned cover or not. Would save you un needed work.
