fusibile links

I burned a fusible link on the fender well. It's the red outside wire in the cluster of five. There are two red wires, one on each side of the split in the loom. It is the one that doesn't have a connecter immediately downstream. What operates off that wire? I ran a jumper wire around it and there is a major short. I disconnected the alternator and that wasn't the problem. The short seems to exist when the key is in the run position. I haven't checked it in the start position. Where do I start looking for the short?

I don't think he's going to answer you. Last time he was online was 6-5-05. Try doing a search on fusible links. I know there was a thread recently about this.

You can replace the fuseable link with a real fuse. Easier to find, easier to replace again if it blows.

I had a fusible link blow a few years ago. I traced it to the bundle of wires under the dash that rubbed the insulation off against the emergency brake. My gremlin was that it would short out randomly when I released the e-brake. Sometime the vibration from the e-brake hitting the rubber stop would cause the wiring bundle to short out, causing the truck to die, since it shorted out the fule shut off solenoid. I think most of that bundle goes to ignition. I ended up putting some PVC pipe zip tied around the wiring bundle so it doesn't short out again and I put a 20 amp fuse in place of the fusible link. I have purchased a fuse block from Geno's but have not put it in place yet. Replacing those fusible links are a pain, since the wire is brittle. Mine went out in front of the house, which made it easier. Someone should have the amp rating for the different colors on the fusible links. Don't put too big of a fuse in or you may burn your truck up.
