My truck is now essentially now a grocery getter with more engine and capacity that I need.
Am giving some thought to the purchase of a 1500 with the Hemi.

Current truck is at 220,000 miles. First brake replacement at 205,000. Had the front end rebuilt along with new Bilsteins at 170,000 miles.
Fluids maintained/ changed according to owner's manual.

Am curious as to what I can expect in the way of future maintenance/repair items to keep this truck fully functional and reliable.
I'd like to weigh those expected costs against a newer truck that would be more in tune to my current needs.

I realize that the newer trucks with more "bells and whistles " are certainly very nice...BUT know the dollar amount involved in the sales tax alone would help offset future repairs. This is my only vehicle.

Appreciate any shared insights.

Regards,
Charlie

Major expenses can arise with any older vehicle at any time. Other than typical 24-Valve stuff...VP-44 etc., there is always a chance of problems with things like the transmission, differentials, air conditioning system, etc. With that said, the depreciation that you have on day 1 of your new 1500 will likely cover the cost of repair of any of those items and then some.

If I were in your shoes, and your current truck was fitting your needs, I'd hang on to it. I have a modern 1/2 ton Ram and I can tell you that it isn't anywhere near the truck your 24-valve is. You will miss it if you let it go.

Well said. I'm trying to convince a buddy at work to get a 2 gen or early 3 gen instead of a current 1500. Thing is, he's never had a CTD before, but he's super impressed by my rig. It's backward thinking to stick with an older truck, but the pluses really outweigh.

Why not keep the 2nd gen and buy a cheap daily driver.I would not feel real comfortable with a high mileage older truck as an only vehicle.

if you don't need the power of the cummins and are not towing anymore, then sell it while it's still worth something, get a small Toyota or something. the oil changes alone are cheaper. i'd buy used, never will i buy new again. the older your truck gets the more it'll nickle and dime you.
