On a trip home this weekend, got the dreaded ding! Looked down to see DEF gauge at ZERO. Of course this throws the truck into de-rate mode. Was only 10 miles or less from where we started out from, so turned around to start looking for issue. Fortunately My FIL has a garage with lifts a short drive away.

Got it on lift and looking for any wire issues, saw white crystalline substance one DEF pump access plate! Removed the plate to find DEF dripping from the bottom of the pump! With AlfaOBD, I was able to confirm that the pump was working but leaking with more than a drip with pump running! All wiring connections were clean and free of corrosion. So that pointed to pump/gauge unit. Being a Sunday afternoon, no choice now but to limp back to where we we're staying and wait for places to open in morning!

Called first dealer to inquire about unit since they were 5 miles away with de-rate clock ticking. They didn't have but showed 2 others to call that were close. Called next closest and they had on the shelf. :)

Service said to bring in right away so they could get us back on the road. About 2 hrs and $2200 later, truck was done and we could get back on the road!

Morale of the post is to be on the look out for white crystals growing around the DEF tank access plate. If you see this happening, better take plate down and inspect to see what is going on! At least de-rate mode was following the odometer mileage and not "lie-o-meter" mileage! Just another thing on the maintenance check list. Will keep an eye on DEF usage to see if it goes down.

Yes, it's the truck in signature. Had just over 170K when it happened. No previous issues with the system. Just ran down to notice and refilled as needed.

Thanks for the reply - I was just curious. At least you got lots of miles and years of use before the failure.

Hoping for the same or more on this one. Just sucks that it happened where I didn't have "my" tools to work with. The lock ring appears to be the same as a fuel sender lock ring. A small hand pump to siphon out the DEF is a must as it would create a mess! If the DW would just get over it! She saying it's more expensive to have the truck. I tried to explain that anything can fail at any time without warning! A new vehicle can break down and leave you stranded. That's just life in general.

Any way, just wanted to give others a heads up on what to look for. Did find a wire harness connector that was wrap the wrong way and rubbing on the cab floor! Just undid the connector and twisted it around to not rub.:) It was nice to have it on a lift and be able to get under it! :D Now to talk the DW into a place with a shop, lift and acreage to enjoy the golden years! :D

As long as repairs+parts store is < New Pickup Payment she should agree with keeping it. But always give her the option to make your New Pickup Payment. Makes her "right" and able to suddenly change her mind when new data makes different choices like keep it better...

This was the first out of pocket repair that has been done. Will be keeping tabs on $ to see if it would tally towards new truck. Might be inheriting a newer truck in about 2 yrs. It'll have less then 50K and Max Care on it! :) We'll see how that goes, because the monthly reminder is a bit steep on the budget! Can't really complain, first time it's left me stranded! Had I been around home, would have been out pump and not labor, although was only $400. But any savings is worth it! :D
