After doing some research it appears the new 6-speed is a Mercedes trans and not a Getrag after all. Read here and it specifically mentions the G-56 http://benzworld.org/news/news.asp?id=106. I guess all those people who were cringing the rebirth of the Getrag can sleep better at night now.

Rosco, where do you conclude the transmission will be the replacement for the NV5600? The article discusses medium-duty trucks, not HD pickups. No mention of "Dodge" or "Ram" in the article.

From what I have been seeing there are no plans at all for Dodge to use anything other than NV5600s for the indefinite future, and that the Getrag rumors are just that- rumors.

Vaughn, DC announced months ago that the NV5600 was being dropped at the end of the calendar year. The G56 will begin production for all HD Rams (both Cummins and Hemi) In January of 2005. The new option code is DEJ.

I checked the reference: It seems that the G-56 is rated for 580 Nm or about 440 ftlb. I can see that with the Hemi. I worry if the same trans will hold up behind the Cummins. The G85 at 850 Nm (637 ftlb) look's like a better choice.

Ah OK KC. I'd seen post both ways and figured it was another one of those rumors like the ones Dodge was replacing the Cummins with Mercedes engines a few years ago. Do you have any news links of the announcement?

I started this thread as kind of a follow up to one hasselbach had started earlier. In the other thread hasselbach says he drove a DC reps early production six speed truck and that when he crawled under it the trans said Mercedes on it. To be honest, I did not belive him so I did a google search using "Mercedes Benz G56 transmission" and that is how I found this info.

I agree with DDahl that the posted torque input is a little anemic for the Cummins. However, The link I posted is a few years old and improvments may have been made to the transmission which could yield higher input ratings.
