G-56 Failure

Picked up my truck from the shop that installed the new clutch (SBC SDD3250-GK-ORG) and a noise remains. Diagnosed as the main drive bearing on the G-56. The following is from an article in the TDR by Joseph Donnelly:

"The main drive bearing at the front of the case (the input shaft bearing) is prone to failure. If you hear a transmission noise, get it fixed immediately, before the main case is ruined."

My research indicates a transmission from a dealer will be a minimum of $7600.

Remanufactured by ATS Diesel Performance at $4788 + $3000 core charge.

Remanufactured by Xtreme Performance at $3295 +$1500 core charge.

A couple of places provide parts for rebuild but I know of no shop in Las Vegas that could do the repair. And even if there was a shop in Las Vegas I don't know if I even want to go that route.

What other options do I have for the G-56?

Should I do anything with the transfer case while it is out?

Is the noise under 1500 RPM in third through sixth, or is it noisey at idle? Also you need to dump the ATF or any oil that is simular? I had my G56 inspected by Standard Transmission who helped Joseph Donnelly in the article you referenced. They found browned bearings from over heating and slight play in the input shaft bearing. Bearings replaced input shaft bearing shimmed and 50 weight synthetic transmission oil. Then the SBC SDD 3250 clutch installed. There is a reason the DMF is used with the G56, NOISE! I dumped the ATF and changed to Mobile Delvac 50 at 136,000 miles (currently 189,000) as recommended. Added Fast Coolers for additional capacity as well and over filled 1 quart in an attempt to extend the life of this transmission so I suspect it was caused by something in the prior history. eBay also has the rebuild kit, needle bearing kit, and shift key/ball kits if you want to do it yourself or have a shop do it. It's like $900 for all 3 of those kits.

A NV271 rebuild kit with new chain is about $500 bucks.

Thanks Eric! Some of the "remanufacturers" allude to there being "upgrades" that apparently deal with some of the issues with the G-56 transmission. Other remanufacturers don't mention "upgrades." I have found no comprehensive list of the "upgrades" I should be looking for whether it is purchasing a remanufactured transmission or a rebuild kit. While I'm looking for a competitive price I'm willing to pay for the best option.

While I'm a DIY on service and the lighter stuff I don't have the time or facility to do this repair (I looked at the You Tube videos). The shop that installed the clutch knows of no one in Las Vegas rebuilding this transmission and I would like to get my truck up and running ASAP.

I believe my transfer case is the NV 273D (electric shift on the fly) but it appears that Torque King has a kit for those as well. I sense no issues with my transfer case (a little finicky getting in and out of 4L) but wondered if it could be inspected while the transmission is out?

The only one I know of who upgrades the G56 is Cody at SuperStick Transmissions in Texas.

Usually the transfer cases are pretty damn tough, if you don't have any reason to rebuild it, I wouldn't at this point.

Blumenthals out of Oklahoma http://www.blumenthalmfg.com/index.php?home is where I would buy mine. I want to convert over to the NV5600 though. They'er willing to take my G56 as core for the NV5600 purchase, but my G56 keeps on going. Noise due to the SMF and SBC DD3250 clutch magnifies the noises, so its hard to tell if it's ready to give up the ghost.

UPDATE: No more noise . . . well not really but at least no more excessive noise in the cab! As it turns out the noise I was hearing was completely normal (based on multiple sources) especially for a transmission with 189,000 miles. The problem was the neck of the rubber boot at the transmission shifter had slipped off the shift stick and noise was coming directly from the transmission into the cab with only the leather boot between the transmission and the cab. I pulled the neck of the rubber boot up over the fat base of the stick and it seemed to be a tight fit and how it was supposed to be attached. However, I got a hose clamp from Lowes and cinched it down just in case so hopefully it won't be going anywhere. RVTRKN (Steve) got to hear it before and after and now my transmission noise in the cab is the same as his G-56. And to think I was contemplating replacing my transmission!

I also want to report that I spoke to Blumenthal's out of Oklahoma City and it turns out that they are the official remanufacturer of the G-56 for Dodge and you can buy direct from them and their price is competitive although on the higher end (but only a $1500 core charge) should you need a replacement.
