I work on these trucks about 6 days a week so I have a pretty big data base

200k on a stock clutch is very rare and not common on trans

Yes, I am sure that is the case, especially for the last 10 years and even on the 94-02 5 spd's with the 12. 3" clutch. However that don't make it any easier to swallow.

A friend of mine's son did an auto to NV4500 conversion on an '01 with a lot of power and even with a button clutch (12. 3) it lasted him less then a year:eek: He hot rods and pulls heavy and he is about 19 or 20 so I can remember those days. They changed over to a 13", I will monitor that.

Using just the Dodge/Cummins combo for an example, Dodge has underestimated the Cummins from day one and continues to this day. Don't get me wrong, my Dodges don't owe me a nickel and would not trade for any thing else. But I think we can all agree, they have under built the drive train with the Cummins option and can't ever get ahead of the medium duty Cummins power increases.

I know there are failures of all types in the drive train, but that does't make it acceptable. I can also agree that some people can break anything. There are commercial haulers on here that get more miles out of their rig then daily drivers, so it can be done. My two Dodges have been flawless so far with no major component failure in over 500,000 miles combined. I can understand the weakness of some components and so I drive accordingly, yet use them hard.

There will always be more material in a diff during it's break in miles.

What you are describing is normal, the next interval always looks better. Sounds like you probably added the cover at 9k allowing lower temps to lend a hand as well
Yeah, excellent point. A fairer comparison would have been to refill with Mopar fluid and see how it would have looked @ 31K. Regardless,I was pleased to see the Amsoil diff fluid holding up so well. My camper's on all the time. We've got a Death Valley run coming, and do to high diesel prices, the camper's going to live in the driveway for awhile. :)

VERY few transmissions,Clutches, will make it to 200k with out repairs

You are so right and from talking to people or reading of their problems on these forums I think you might not have seen as many for your data base if they were more informed. If they would listen to you when you provide your findings after a tear down as to why their equipment failed you might not have as many to add to your data base?

I learned in my twenty's to take care of my equipment because you won't like the cost of repairs on an OTR tractor! I took that same thinking to my personal vehicles and my '93 DC has a little over 331,000miles on a 5 speed that most people hate, the Getrag. It has never been opened other than for regular service, I've towed with it and found it to be a good transmission as long as you understand it's weaknesses.

As for the clutch it had about 220,000 mile on it when I pulled the trans to replace a blown out rear main seal. If it hadn't been oil soaked I would have put it back in there and continued on! If a person treats their equipment well and understands it's weakness's it can and will last. Sure there will always be Eq. flaws after all it's made by man and eventually it will wear out. So between those that push their equipment and the Eq. flaws plus the eventual worn out ones you will continue to add to your data base and most importantly they will help you and your peers pay your bills. :D

Just my 2 cents worth;)

My 94 5 speed clutch almost made it to 100k

With 600lbft torque but I ran into Joe D at a

Club dyno event. Where he talked me into a bit

More lol dyed on the dyno just as was about to

Lay down some good numbers(950)

Never had a problem with the trans till 3rd gear

Broke. always changed it's fluid on time and ran coolers

Yep when it comes out of your pocket you have to think twice!

On a side note I just came home from a supply run to the AV and the 76 station by the house has jumped up . 20 cents to $4. 49 for #2, a matter of 2 hrs!
