I was just informed by a well respected DC Technician the 6-speed behind the Cummins engine is now a Mercedes transmission. The G-56 "Getrag" 6-speed is behind the "Hemi" engine. This DC Tech has been to many DC Drive train Schools. I spoke with him again, and he says if you look under the current trucks with the 6-speed transmission and Cummins power, you will not see Getrag on it anywhere, however if you look under the current truck with a "Hemi" and 6-speed, the name "Getrag" is embossed in the case.

Any specifics on this Mercedes transmission? What are the other applications it is used in? What kind of engines/HP/TQ is it behind?

Think it would be great if it is a more severe application. If it is a light to light/medium duty app then  .

Kinda like the Allison. Good name, but the design in the Duramax can't hold full power available in the engine.

Stuttgart/São Bernardo do Campo, Sep 05, 2002

DaimlerChrysler do Brasil is inaugurating on this Wednesday, September 04, in the company unit of São Bernardo do Campo (SP), a new assembly line for medium duty transmissions.

"The new assembly line integrates São Bernardo do Campo to the company world strategy to produce Mercedes-Benz vehicles with aggregates of its own brand, maintaining the differential of quality, technological innovation, performance safety and high reliability levels, already recognized by our customers worldwide", says Ben van Schaik, president of DaimlerChrysler do Brasil.

Transmission production

In the new assembly line of medium duty transmissions, which occupies a 2. 500 m2, three types of transmissions are going to be produced - G56, G60 and G85 – to equip several models of bus and truck chassis of the Mercedes-Benz brand, from the light, medium and semi-heavy segments.

Rusty, you left out the worst parts:

The Mercedes-Benz transmission project incorporates the main development trends in Europe and the United States. The application of alternate materials like aluminum for the housings, resulted in lighter transmissions that provide a better performance and fuel savings. The gears with ground teeth offer better efficiency, higher torque and less noise. The sealed bearings provide bigger maintenance intervals and higher performance of the double synchronization, which ensures smoother shifts.

Transmissions G56, G60 and G85 have the respective torque of 580, 600 and 850 Nm. Model G56 is applied to light vehicles, from 7 to 10 tons, and medium ones from 11 to 12 tons; model G60 may equip medium vehicles from 12 to 14 tons, and semi-heavy ones from 14 to 17 tons; and model G85 is destined to heavy vehicles.

Aluminum trannys, sealed bearings, and the whopping G85 that holds a massive 627 ft/lbs of torque :(

I only cited the portion of the article that identified the G56 as a DaimlerChrysler (as opposed to Getrag) gearbox. You're right - I didn't get into the technical specifics of the G56.

Crap, I didn't catch the Newton Meters... so yeah, 850X. 7376=626. 96 ft-lbs... which means the G56 is rated at 427. 808 ft-lbs.

Understood. The G56 IS the Mercedes transmission. Maybe the Getrag wouldn't be so bad after all huh?

Guess I'll be keeping my 2nd gen with the NV5600 alot longer now. Any idea what the 'official' torque rating for the NV5600 is?

Since the buyout, the New Venture website doesn't seem to allow access to product details. IIRC, it used to show a 560 lb-ft input torque rating for the NV5600.

Found this Mercedes spec sheet here .

Looks like the most they are putting in front of the G56 is 177 HP and 498 ft/lbs. Heck, the G85 is only getting 231 HP/600 ft/lbs.

How are they putting the G56 behind a Cummins 600?
