Hey y'all,

Was at a new shop in the area. We got to talking about swapping from 3.42's to 4.10's to get a better pull and off line digs while being able to tow better as well.

Anyone's thoughts on this matter? Price for parts and labor was 1,555$ and I supply my own fluids.

comrade - seems like a fair price to me. the diff in my 02 2500 blew up at 240k. cost me 900 to replace the guts excluding the ring and pinion. friend owns the shop. he showed me his " cost " i have no problem with people marking stuff up in a fair way. just sayin' cheers comrade! :) chris

Yeah, no real reason to make any changes or do the swap as mine are fine right now. I changed the fluid again at 200k and checked the backlash and all was good.

Really only got to talking about it because the he thinks the truck would benefit from them since I like to run other trucks from time to time around here and he says it'll pull harder on the low end but it'll be there when I tow lol.

i gather the truck would be a lot snappier off the line with 410s. my current 18 2500 g56 is sluggish with the 342. cheers!

4.10's with the one overdrive G-56 will be gear bound for freeway cruising unless you are running large tires. It will be a towing beast tho, however, sometimes that's not a good thing because you have too much power in 6th, a bad thing. 3.42's-3.73's will force a down shift to 5th, a good thing.

Truck runs 265/75r17 tires. I went 1 size over factory 245's just to fill the wheel wells a little better. Truck is factory height other than that and 2wd. Again this is not an auto truck

I would look at the ROI (return on investment) on changing out the differential for your truck. What will the pay back be if any and how long you need to operate the truck to justify this cost! Will the 4:10 improve drivability around town unloaded? These are questions you need to answer yourself to see if you really need to change out the rear end.
Just my $0.02.

Jim,

Thats Why i posted here. Wanted to get some of the more experienced folks to weigh in on this. I am working to pay off other bills first before I decide so i have a lot of time to do my research and make a decision.

I've never owned any truck with 4.10s, only this ram with 3.42s and a 2000 f250 7.3l with 3.73s and a big lift so my experiences are about the same. Looking for someone that has the 4.10s and daily's the truck empty around town and city's.

With that I can imagine city mileage will be total crap!!!! Right now I drive 32 miles 1 way to work. 15 miles of it is city stop lights and the rest is highway. Average speed entire trip is right about 65. I drive highways at 70-73mph just because i'm not really in a hurry to get anywhere so my handcalc mileage city is 18mpg in DFW. Highway is 26mpg at 70mph.

Yeah,it's really low gearing. I have 35's and carry a 2200# popup around constantly. I wish I had the later transmission like yours.

2657517’s or 2657017’s????
I’d find an online gear calculator, and go to The Diesel Hub, and source the G56 transmission ratios for each gear, then decide if the swap is justifiable.

4.10's are way to low for the G-56 if you want any kind of road mileage. You would have to run 35" tires to keep the rpms down if you cruise at any speed. On a 2x4 that is hard to do. You need a 34" tire with the G-56 and 3.73 gears to get to keep rpms at 1900-2100 at 70-75 mph. That will help make reverse usable without low range but still too high. 1st become useless for anything but starting out a heavy load. Always a compromise with a standard transmission.
