Hey, I just found this thread. Way to go -- Thanks for the info, KKunz! Man, now I really want to do this. Now if only there was a way to put a higher 6th gear in the G56 . . .

CTD12V

I just did a fluid change on a 2006 with a G56 and when I opened the drain a bunch of ball bearings fell out with some small springs and part of the cage the fluid was silver it had so much metal in it. It only had 25143 miles on it so it is at the Dodge dealer for a new transmission don't know what happened but it did not look good these trans have ATF in them don't know if anyone has tried a heavier fluid but I think I would if I had one.

any up dates on the probelm Dieseldemon?

I'm looking at doing this swap in a 1st gen. . how do you guys like it ?

thanks

Deo

What makes the g56 better than the nv 4500 or 5600? What is different about it? Is it 6 spd and are the ratios different?

Dodge told my cust that the reverse syncro fell apart but I have never seen ball bearings and small springs and a cage in a syncro unless the g56 is diff than any trans I have seen I do have the CD on the 2003 G56 I will look and see what is in the syncros.

The cd manual for the year 2003 models probably covers a nv5600.

Does the G56 use a different starter?. . then the 2nd gens? I am looking at swapping one into my first gen 4x4. . its a 5spd getrag now. . I have a new in box southbend fe big clutch kit with the updgraded / larger fly wheel etc. I wonder if I can use that kit and just change the disc so the splines work?. . mummn onder what else major I would need ?

Thanks

Deo

according to the TDR article - supposedly easier to rebuild too when the time arrives,. Plus they shift really well. and deeper first gear.

I am doing this swap into a first gen soon, as I bought a G56 yesterday. . being shipped to me now... its a '07 zeromile take out from a 6. 7 L 4x4 so it should have the AE gearing with the . 74 OD. .

I'm trying to figure out a few details :

- The nv4500 engine to trans adapter ... . is that what you used with the G56

in you swap? or did you need the 3rd gen adapter?.

- The Starter... . did you have to buy a 3rd gen starter? I may have to as

the first gen and second gen starters are different.

- The clutch disk ... ... . what disk did you use? as the G56, I was told has a

1 3/8 input shaft that is longer then a nv4500 or nv5600.

I have a 13" flywheel with ballbearing and con fe new kit at home for a

5 pd Getrag. I am, crossing my fingers to be able to use that and just

change the fe disk to a 1 3/8" FE disk, and buy the upgraded hydraulics.

Any Thoughts???

- The trans output spline is 29 splines correct with the round 6 bolt pattern

to mount the transfercase correct? I have a different transfercase then

the 2nd gens. I hope it mounts a np 205 without to much hassle. I plan

on twin sticking my np 205 while I have the chance.

Thanks, if you can help on any of these points it would be appreciated. I plan on documenting the conversion on firstgen sections. I started a thread there too. also I plan on mounting a Chelsea 442 series pto on the trans too . . if any of the 2nd gen swapo guys are interested in doing that. I'll be documenting that at the same time.

Thanks

Deo

no updates yet been spring cleaning the yard junking soem parts cars and now cleaning the garage etc. . I am going to test fit a spare engine and trans in the garage with the clutch etc. this will probably be helpful. I think I need to buy all the bellhousing to engine and clutch bolts etc... . my new brother in law is a parts man at a dodge dealer so I got to go and check the parts lists etc. . any other ideas?

i have to finish two projects before the truck. . getting my economy lawn trawctor gooing good. . 75% done now. . and swapping my TDI passat interiors/ and suspension etc so that is about a month of work there... so the time line for the trans project is put off another month or so. . hopefully it will be done by mid summer. . I still plan to document and take lots of pics etc...

thanks,

Deo

Who said any thing about buying a bellhousing?. . the G56 has a cast in bellhousing. I said ... " I think I need to buy all the bellhousing to engine and clutch bolts etc. . " . . Ie I don't have the BOLTS & Hardware to mount it to the engine and adapter etc...

Thanks,

Deo

So can anyone tell me what starter to use with this swap? I know 1st and 2nd gen starters are different, but which do I use when putting a G56 into a 1st gen? Shadrach

Supposedly South bend made me a flywheel fro my fe clucth that will use the first gen starter and enginge adapter. . with the g56. . I hope that is correct. . i have a2nd gen adapter here but no 3rd gen and only 1st gen starters. . I haven't test fit the componets either as i've been trying to finish the family car before a family vacation in a week. . If your not in a huge hurry i hope to have the G56 swap done before october. . at least before deer season here ha. .

thanks

Deo
