It’s only a matter of time before my nv4500 goes BANG again. I have had 2 nv4500 in this truck I tow a lot and never use 5th . I considered swapping in an nv5600 but with all that is going on with them the nv5600 is no longer an option I also considered an auto swap but after driving some auto diesels that’s not going to happen either. I can get a G56 out of a friends totaled 3rd gen. Is the G56 bell housing the same bolt pattern as the nv4500 or will I need the engine adapter plate that bolts to the block? is the flywheel bolt pattern the same? What about the np241 HD will it bolt to the g56? I’m just trying to get some information on what all I will have to do to do the swap, has any one done the swap in a 2nd gen? The G56 is free if I want it so I figure it’s worth a try.

Look at the last TDR mag. It had an article on the G56. They talked alot about the flywheel if I remember correctly.

I read the article lots of good stuff in there. Nice to know south bend make a kit to get rid of the (DMF). My big concern is the G56 bell housing mounting to the engine.

back to top for this. I am wondering if the G56 uses the same bellhousing etc. I currently have a NV5600 and all the parts to go behind a 4BT. But am desiring the lighter trans, and lower 1st gear of the G56. Considering swapping everything for a G56 setup. I am aware of the dual mass flywheel, I have found a good used one, or thinking of going for the aftermarket single friction. Not sure if this is more of a PITA than its worth...

A 5600 out of an 02 bolted up to my 06 so yes i would say that a g56 will work on your application and they should be the same bolt pattern. Im not sure about the transfer case but if it will work on the 5600 it should work on the g56.

I too am wondering how long my 4th NV5600 will last, First dropped 5th, Second and third NV4500s were Standard Transmission and gear remans and broke the input gears. Now running the original nv4500 that dropped 5th rebuilt buy guy up the road. I too am wondering about swapping in the g56... But I don't have easy access to a G56 to find out. I too looked into the NV5600s seem a little pricy and getting harder to come by now. Take the G56 while the price is right from your friends wrecked rig, figure the rest out as you go!

I will follow this post closely... Or Look for a good used 3rd gen quad cab long bed later in the summer with a NV5600 and regretfully sell my 99 with 186000 miles.

G56 conversion

Dan at Quad 4x4 was suppose to do a NV5600 to G56 conversion this past fall. Might want to ask him.

Yeah, I know the G56 has lower OD. But, Price and Parts availability is Looking worse for the NV5600 every day. There has to be a reason that DMC switched to the G56. I think that reason is $$$ Cost less. And I bet there was something to do with they wanted to get out from under (Partnership) w/ GM. So, Someone soon needs to come up with a swap kit. Come on, Hate to say it but being produced in Brazil (G56) has to be cheaper than the NV5600 produced in Indiana. I will call Quad 4x4 when I have a little more $$$ in my pocket. Or when I have alot of $$$ in my pocket I will call the Dodge dealer??? Or I will just get rid of my 99 2500 and find a newer truck with a 6 speed.

Luckily I have 3. 55 gears so the G65 and my slightly taller tires should put me setting pretty.

Anybody found out any more info on this? I sure would be interested in a G56 conversion down the road. I just looked at Quad 4x4's website and couldn't find anything about converting to a G56.

If you do it, KKunz, let us know how it goes!
