G56, hard shift into fifth

Today I noticed it was hard shifting into 5th, but no problems shifting into the other gears, it felt like it did not go into gear as if I had to shift a littler further and harder to get it that point, but it still went into fifth from forth gear, but without that positive shift feel. At a stop light I shifted threw all the gears and notice a whining noise trying to get into in third and fifth gear only, and with the same none postive shift feel. When I got to my destination and restarted the engine and could not duplicate the problem again.



I just changed the transmission and transfer case oil last week with Mopar ATF+4. I put 6 liters in the G56, it took 5. 75 L before it started to leak out the fill hole, I then put the other 0. 25 L with the passenger side lifted up. I read on this fourm that we needed to put in an extra liter, making a total of 7 L in the G56. Is this true? The manual and the dealer, tell me it takes a little less than 6 L. Is this part of my problem?

Fluid level could definatley be a cause to your issue. I am still new to the '06s but I would double check around on that proper level quantity as I would like to know as well for future maintenance knowledge.

My '06 has always felt funny going into 5th gear. No matter how smooth you try to shift, there's always a roughness... almost like a dry gear knicking another gear feel. I've tried shifting fast, slow, no throttle, part throttle, etc, etc, and it always feels harsher than going to other gears. On the TSB for tranmission popping out of reverse (mine also does this), it indicates a connection between the 5th gear planetaries and the reverse cluster. I've wondered whether these two are related or not.



Does your transmission jump out of reverse when backing down a hill?

Mine hasn't jumped out of reverse like you mentioned but I will keep that in mind. I can vouch for the "rough" feeling of going into 5th gear though. Just in the 2 weeks that I have owned the truck the 5th gear shift feels very different going into gear than the others as you described, I guess it is normal but I am interested to find out more on why treetop's trans would not go into 5th.

No, I have never tried backing down a hill in reverse, otherwise no problems with reverse. I have yet to reproduce the problem I had yesterday, just a little notchy going into third, since I had the truck, otherwise shifting normally. Hopefully it was just a one time quirk.

Just to clarify. It did shift into fifth but it felt like it did not go into gear as if I had to shift a littler further and harder along with a whining noise to get it to that point, but when I let go of the clutch, I was in fifth gear, but without that positive shift feel that I had normally at the end of that throw. Again, I am not able to reproduce the problem since I shut the engine down and restarted it yesterday and have shifted threw fifth gear many a times since then with no problems. I was just wondering if anyone else had similar problems and also to find out what is the right oil capacity for the G56.

according to the 2006 manual it says 12 pts. (5. 6 L) for fluid capacity for the g-56
