Manual says capacity on the G56 is 6 qts. I've read more than one thread here that says the G56 is shipped a qt. low.

Question is, if the fluid is up to the check plug hole, is the transmission a qt low or how are we suppossed to know??

i went through this a couple days ago..... Fill too the fill hole... . then you nedd to add one more quart, either through the shifter in the cab which coud be a pain, or there is a another plug lookin but its more like a long bolt on the driver side right above the slave cylinder and it is a Torx head the size is T-60... . take it out and add in your additional quart there... . I just did mine yesterday... . Hope that helps... . BTW i got this info straight from the dealer

You could do it that way, or simply park your truck with the passenger's side a couple of inches higher than the the drivers side and add the quart through the fill hole. That's what I and others have done, works real good.

Or simply fill it to the hole since those trucks that were brought in and "overfilled" left the factory without having the uppermost rearward bearing pre-oiled during assembly... that is the only reason for the "recalled" overfill.

The transmission shops all say to overfill by a quart, but have we really seen a rash of G56 failures because of being filled to factory specs? They say the same thing about the NV5600...

IMO, fill to the hole, get as much in over that as you can (not to exceed a extra quart) and call it a day...

Steved, Can you tell me, was there a recall for low fluid in the G56 trans? I've got an 05 with a G56 that I just changed fluid in and filled to the bottom of the fill hole per the factory service manual. If there was a recall, do you remember the number? Thanks, Lektrikman

Do a search on here... I remember there being several threads about this... I know it was a dodge tech that stated what the overfill actually addressed... I know I read it on one of these forums...

There was also a lot of confusion as people "assumed" the fill hole had been drilled in the wrong location, which is definately not the case... I'm not sure there was an official recall or TSB on it (might have even been an internal memo?)... it didn't apply to me so it was more of an "ahh-ha" thing that I didn't really pay particular attention too...

The "recall" hopefully got trucks before they ever left the dealerships... at least that was the intent... but I remember them specifically stating to add an addtional quart of fluid through the shifter tower... once that was done initially, it was never needed to be done again.

Doughboy21kd, thanks for the good info. Just one question, did the dealer say what the function of this torx bolt is, a plug or a bolt for holding something?

There was never a recall on this. They held up delivery of G56 equipped trucks, in March 2005, because some had left the plant with the rear bearing not lubed. The fix was to overfill the transmission.

I've got over 16K on mine, towing a 32' fifth wheel several times a year, and have had absolutely no problems with my G56 or DMF clutch. I never added a single drop to the transmission. It's operated smoothly and is superior to my old NV4500 in my 2001... . ;)

They said some words like it being a bolt of some type for the 2 gear shift fork or something like that "i think" could be wrong... ... . They told me that, thats how they filled the trannys on the trucks that came from the factory low on fluid... . BTW all info is directly from the dealer(DAVE SMITH)..... After i called them i went outside and added my extra quart with no problems... ... Very Easy to do and quick... ...

Use a T-60 on a 1/2 inch drive ratchet and loosen, then turn and pull out, it will be kinda tuff at first cause theres a rubber o-ring in the middle of the bolt, it looks like a Fill plug at first but then when you pull it out it looks like a bolt... ... . Hope this helps let me know.....

ALL INFO IS PER DAVE SMITH
