G56 oil

Its about time to change out the oil in the G56. I was thinking about using Royal Purple Synchromax. Anyone have any other recommendations?

Thats What Is On Dealer Connect So I Assume It Is Correct.

Actually I've been wondering about this. I haven't even picked up my truck yet (4 days, YAHOO), so I don't have to change mine, but I'm betting that the service manual for the medium duty trucks over in Europe doesn't say ATF+4 for the G56.



Anyone know someone who can get a manual or the fluid specs for the Atego truck?

Its a low end syn. like a group 3 or so I've read.

I called Royal Purple and they said the the Syncromax is what they recommend for any manual trans that calls for ATF. I think that is what I will use.

I used Royal Purple in my 2001 NV4500 5 speed and will take a close look at it for my G56 fluid change in a couple of months...

Is the G56 rated for GL-4 or GL-5 fluid, what ever the rating is that is what I would use. The synchromesh oils are GL-4 rated fluids. If the G56 is rated for GL-5 fluid I would choose another fluid other than a synchromesh.

The 5 speed needed GL-4 because it contained lower amounts of zink (I think it was zink). What would happen is the trans would get hot and the zink would plate onto the syncros causing shifting problems.



I would use ATF+4 like dodge says. One person remarked they used amsoil +4 and it shifted smother.

Dido on the smoother shifting w/Amsoil ATF+4 , Stopped the neutral gear rattle also. Put it in the transfer case while you are looking at it(if it is 4x4).

Once again, Dodge recommends to use ATF+4 in the G-56 Transmissions. IF the Royal Purple Synchromax meets that requirement, then I would say you could use it without warranty issues.

If you want to experiment with fluids that are known NOT to meet the manufacture's specs, why not try antifreeze?

Man did I have a brain fart. G56 calls for ATF+4 and that is all I would use.

I wouldn't call using RP an experiment. I was asking if anyone knew if RP Synchromax met the requirements necessary to be used in lieu of an atf fluid in a manual. I still don't like using atf in a manual. IMHO ATF has many properties not needed in a a manual transmission such as certain frictional properties. I want less friction. I don't have clutches in my transmission. Just because chrysler spec'ed a fluid to get beyond the warranty period doesn't mean I wouldn't be interested in prolonging its life beyond that.



I really phrased my question incorrectly. It should have read "Does anyone know if RP synchromax or any other available synchro gear lube meet the requirements of this transmission because if they do Chrysler could not void the warranty even if it is a lubrication related failure, but it would have to meet or exceed those requirements. That is really my question. Unfortunately lube related questions seem to be the largest mystsery to almost everyone on this board(including myself). I have found much more knowledge on this subject on other sites. I did want to add that my neighbor tried experimenting with antifreeze in his transmission. Yes it was a synthetic antifreeze. His fuel economy rose to over 30 mpg, but I guess I'll stick to ATF+4 for now.

Some Manual Transmissions have been "designed" to use ATF in them. I purchased a new 1962 Plymouth Valiant with a Manual Transmission, and ATF was the Lube used in it from factory! Bottom line is ATF lubes have been used in Many Manual Transmissions for decades!
