I'm in the process of installing a G56 out of an '06 into my '97. I've read the TDR article on the transmission and understand that it takes 6 qts of ATF+4. Since the shift tower is off now pouring it into the top is easy. Is that the only way to get the full 6 quarts in. I have read the fill port is at the 4 qt level and the plug above it should not be removed.

Also, what is this plug for? I'm guessing the backup lights.

One more. There is a tube next to the shifter. Is it for the vent and should there be a rubber tube hooked to it?

the fill plug is at the 6 quart level. fill with 7 quarts go to genosgarage. com and order the trans-cool this requires one more quart for a total of two gallons

Games,

I don't know haw far you are into this, but have you double checked the starter drive to ring gear relationship?

You can run the truck up on a tall curb, jack one side up, etc to allow an extra quart to be added through the regular fill.

No, but while torquing the flywheel bolts the baring tool fit perfectly. It is a SBC smf. I'll pull the fuel shut off solenoid connector and try cranking it.

Since I have your attention, how much free travel should I have before the clutch engages?

I'm still wondering about the black elec plug near the rear of the transmission and the short tube next to the shift tower.

Games,

Sorry, as you mentioned a brand name clutch, I cannot answer you on the clutch question.

We have a G56 but it is not on the rack right now. I looked at the pictures we have of it and I do think you are looking at the backup switch. Not aware of any other switch on the G56. We didn't focu on any pictures showing the vent, but I bet that is what it is.

Sorry, I wasn't able to help more.

Good luck, this should be an interesting project.

I got a lot of help from another member who did the conversion. I tried the starter and had no issues so I'm sure the clearences are good. The clutch engages with the pedal about an inch off the floor which is too close I think. The linkage was replaced 365k ago and may be worn out:-laf Thanks for the info.

CKelley, I'm using the fast coolers from my NV4500, if I can source the long bolts I need. Wouldn't you know the bolt threads are different:mad:

Since you are in Texas where it gets hot, you might want to consider using Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid, as recommended by Standard Transmission in Fort Worth.

Joe, I posted on that back in Sep when I bought the transmission. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/5-9l-engine-transmissions-2003-2007/216110-g56-oil.html I trust Charlie and his staff, but have to agree with those who recommend sticking with the factory fill as well. I haven't bought any oil yet, so what risk am I taking by using synchromesh?

+1 on the back up light switch. I got the connector off a crashed truck to splice into my harness.

My breather tube had no hose attached to it (and still doesn't)

I'm running ATF, but wonder what Mercedes spec's in their Meduim duty trucks with the G56.
