my truck has only 1500 miles and i can not get a clean shift from 1st to 2nd while towing, especially on a hill. it seems to clunk or grind going into second. when i picked the truck up at the dealer , i could not get it out of reverse in the parking lot. when i did , i tried it again, and it was very hard to get out. after about 10 times , it works pretty smooth and does not get stuck. i put about 300 k on 2 nv5600's and never had a problem. i do not think it is me. it seems you have to let the rpms drop with the cluth in before you go to second and not rush the shift and everything is smooth. the problem is when your towing up a hill , then second is almost no good anymore.

That certainly does not sound good. I would be back at the dealer pronto. When I got mine it took a little getting used to, but none of what you are discussing. I find that I still do not get a smooth straight line from 5th into 6th. I read somewhere years ago to make a slight pause in N before going to the next gear up, so that is kind of how I shift. Plus, the old trannys years ago required double shifting and that's what I learned on. You might want to go over to the Carson Dodge site and run this past them, they have a q & a forum.

Kurt,

2006 2500 4x4 g56, I have not liked the way the transmission shifts from day one, I have close to 10k miles , and I have to shift slow or it clunks or jumps, especially if I try to jam it in gear fast from neutral, I think the clutch is not completely disengaging when shifting, if you shift slow like your not in a hurry it works better, hope you find cure.

The G56 is a medium duty transmission and has way too much mass to speed shift. Trying to accelerate quickly is a waste of time with this transmission and makes it hard to shift. But when you treat it right it is the smoothest transmission I have ever owned, I do most of my shifting without the clutch and it works very well and I also pause in Neutral weather i am sifting up or down and give the engine a rev then it slips right into gear. when you match your ground speed with your rpms it shifts very smoothly.

Recommend have the dealer check it out. My G56 is very smooth empty or towing. I did know someone with an 05' G56 that had similar issues. The transmission locked up for some unknown reason. Called dealer and had it towed. Dealer claimed no problem. transmission locked up again. Dealer continued to claim no problem. He got rid of the truck.

I had an

03 auto didnt really like the way it handled my 5er so traded for 06 with g56. At first had problem with clunking on 1-2 shift. I found that not letting rpm go all the way down helped. I leave slight pressure on skinny pedal .
