Filtration question

MPG's going down, is it the new fuel?

I like the idea of having a 6 speed where you can tow in 5th gear at 55-65 and run empty at 75. Because of the close split between 5th and 6th with the G56, this would be very duable with a rear end ratio of 3. 30 - 3. 55 or so. Heavy launches would still be pretty easy with the low granny. There was talk a while back about AAM working on a better ratio for the G56. Anyone heard if it's acutallly being worked?

Bigd how are ya doin at sled pullin? Are u on a stock charger?

Im doing pretty good there is a video over on www.kydtr.com in the truck pull section it is called richmond kottpa vid check it out i beat some stout trucks its probably on the third page or so.

http://video.thedieselgarage.com/video/20c...80e00c01a39.htm there is the link to it and yes somehow my stock charger is still holding together that was my last pull before my transmission gave out i won.

Oh yeah mine is the black quad cab dually

Which Is my point exactly. Imagine that "sweet spot" in 5th with one more gear to go. You could run the bottom five back there in the colonys and when out west you would be able to drive the LEGAL SPEED LIMIT and not go broke doing so :-laf :-laf

EXACTLY... I completely avoid Texas now because of the 80mph speed limit... it is just too freeking scary driving at even 70mph (well OUT of the sweet spot) when traffic is now passing you at 90-100mph...

Heck, at 80mph I'm just short of being in the red... probably doing close to 2700RPMs. And probably getting reallly close to single digits in mpg.

I have 4. 10s... I'm not sure a gear swap to 3. 73s would be worthwhile... I'd really like to find a set of 3. 42s... but I haven't been able to find anyone who makes them yet... the gear vendors is too much $$ and then you have an "extra" transmission to have issues with essentially (and not many places to take it in for repair!).

I was thinking exactly the same thing, Mac. I thought it sounded like marketing material. It was so glowing it sounded almost placative.

YUP - my impression exactly - I was looking for that jar of Vaseline...

I seriously suspect there are significant behind the scenes connection$ and obligation$ that substantially dictate and color their public opinions - sure would be interesting to get their private, off the record comments... ;)

Have all of you read the ratings Blumenthal gave the G56 .

Sounds like a much better unit than the 56 Honey???.

Check it out on page 94.

Mac

Well thumb back a few pages to page 72 and look at the tow ratings of the automatic vs. the 6-speed manual. It says that the automatic will tow 3,000 lbs more than the manual. I posted a new topic on the General Diesel forum about this.

If this is true, then the big puff piece on the G56 is just that ... a puff marketing piece. Dodge had BETTER GET A REAL TRUCK MANUAL transmission for he Cummins unless they are planing to phase out manual transmissions!

This may indeed be the case. I heard this rumor several years ago. If you notice, DC has sorta phased out manuals in other models for the most part... either you order one and pay extra for the "upgrade" or they don't offer one. This was mainly in the Jeeps and the cars... but I could see it rolling over to the trucks too.

Even back in 91, there were usually a good mix of auto vs manuals on the lot I worked at... now, I had to look long and hard to get the 6spd I currently have... I couldn't imagine trying to find one in my area now (without having the dealer order it or pulling it from another dealer in another region (what they did for this current truck).

Why can't they offer the Aisin unit that's on the new HD platform as an option?

Ryan

They almost need to in order to keep up in the "auto gear wars" with the 6spd allison and 5 spd ford...

I just changed mine with Amsoil ATF and it took exactly 6 quarts. The level was a few millimeters below the fill hole after putting the 6 qts in. Shifts smoother with the amsoil.

I can't understand why DCX hasn't brought out something in the 3. 42/3. 55 range for the G56 crowd... get it down into a more "street" friendly animal...

I know I've been thinking about ridding myself of these 4. 10s in my 5600... driving all around sucks until you're loaded... but for me, that's not all that often.

I think it would be better if American Axle had a 2 speed rear end so you can get into the high range for highway use ... 12 gears would be very nice. :D

G56 plastic gears

Anybody know anything about the plastic gears in the G56? To get off the subject a little, how much is the computor cutting back power in the lower gears of the CR trucks when unloaded. I personally can't see any more than 200hp in these engines. An early VP44 truck (215hp) will leave these for dead from a stop. I'm talking non modified engines. I think DC is tring to protect it's warrantee(driveline). I know the CR engine is a powerhouse, not when the comp. is taking the guts out of it though in some of the gears unloaded. I wonder with the plastic geared G56 how much torque you really have down low at low road speeds. Hopefully someone will dyno their stock truck. Keep on Truckin!

My truck put down whats in my sig! And let me tell ya i can smoke my bro-inlaws vp44 stock for stock pritty bad! So im pritty sure the computer isnt cuttin any power!

all we can do is wait for someone to make a billit main shaft for the g56 trans and then we wont have to worry about not being able to sledpull.

Robert,

Its not just the mainshaft breaking... . thats the nv5600.

The G56 just pukes all of its guts out into a million and one pieces when it craps the bed!! :-laf :-laf :p

Someday you guys will face the fact that its a weak transmission. I like the argument about the G56 being used in Medium duty trucks in Europe... . Anyone know how much horsepower a medium duty truck has in say Germany or Britain? Try about 140hp :-laf :-laf

I dont want to start a war but Justin i disagree that its a week transmission! I might agree with that when pullin "with out mods". But like i said before its a new transmission and with time i think that we will be able to pull it without any trouble! But this is just my opinion!

Justin what is the tq #'s of those 140hp motors im not sayin that they are high but my D6R dozer only has 228hp but the tq of that motor is like 1600 and above(not sure exact). And i do know that there is a big difference in these motors i just used it as an exsample. Justin im not in any way tryin to start a war but i just think that with time and the right modds (as with anything) it will be a great transmission to work with! And my truck put down 286hp thats alittle more than 140hp. But dont take any of this the wrong way its just an opinion.
