Sorry I have not done it but researched it and REALLY wish I did the swap. I have a new truck now but my 2010 blew a G56. My previous 2003 had 400k trouble free miles on a NV5600!

I don't think its that hard though.

For some reason I remember wanting to switch to a one piece aluminum driveshaft also.

Good luck on your search, I might have read something on the cummins forum but wow what a cluster trying to find good info and weed through all the junk on that site!

I think you could do the swap with all OEM parts. The 6. 7 and 5. 9 blocks are externally the same, and the 3rd gen had an OEM NV5600.

I'd like to find out how to get the . 79OD from a AD G56 into my NV5600!

What about the connection and dimensions to the transfer case, is it the same, could it be bolted on? I assumed the block is the same, but what about the distance from the block to the transfer case?

I would say it's safe to say it would bolt up. There were no changes to the transfer case in 2005. 5 that I am aware of.

You will probably need a crossmember from a 2003-2005. 4 NV5600 truck, or at the very least the mounting plate on the crossmember.

Richard says the NV5600 is longer, but thinks it will fit after the driveshaft is shortened. I will research it some more and probably convert it next May when I have the cash. What I need to do is, get my brothers truck next to mine and compare them to see if it will be a simple job. I imagine the cross members are going to have to be changed. I think I'm going to start looking in junk yards for donors.

No! I'm waiting for the failure, if it happens, as a good friend of mine had suggested. I'm in the middle of ordering everything I need to install an OEM Auto trans cooler in the front of the radiator. I've got the pump, cooler, and most of the fittings needed for installing it, now it's just finding the time. I've got so many projects going at the moment, the good thing about it is, it will easily adapt to the NV5600.

The first step I took in the starting the replacement of my G56 with a NV5600, was comparing cross members. I noticed the G56 crossmember sits lower than the NV5600 crossmember, so it should be easy to build up to the hight needed. But that's as far as I've gotten.

Ya the xmember needs raised or trans mount lowered 1"1/4. Which is no big deal. I bought a complete kit. Adapter plate clutch ( valair dd). and everything for the 5600. Installed it all last night. The clutch lever. Is hitting the bell housing. I'm not sure what's going on. Im going to pull the trans back out today I think.

I say kit but I got lucky found a guy that got rid of the 5600 for a full built auto. And the 5600 was rebuilt 1500 miles ago. So I bought everything he had. Out of an 04. But I think you miss understood me. The clutch lever inside the bell housing that pushes the throw out bearing to the pressure plate. It is pushed back tight to the bell housing.

I suggest having Std. go through the NV5600 and especially check that the rear mainshaft bearing has not galled up and spun in the case. Have them put in the power lube pkg. Then you will have a great trans with a long life.
