My truck since new has made a tapping noise, almost like a valve tap, in 5th gear. I noticed it right away and figured it would clear up on its own. Now I have only 3k on it and it is still there. I have yet to get my trailer on it so I doubt the motor or trans is fully broken in. The sound can only be heard at lower speeds, like 1500 rpm in fifth, it may still be there at higher speeds but it cannot be heard. It does not make the noise in any other gear or speed/rpm that is why I suspect the trans.

I have a noise in 6th gear especially while decelerating. I'm not sure if I'd call it a tapping noise. I noticed that if I push the shift lever lightly right or left while keeping it in 6th gear, the noise stops... . I can only hear it with the radio off, the A/C off and the windows up. I decided to consider it a character flaw.

My replacement G56 makes a "ticking" noise in 5th gear. Almost like a high frequency valve tap. This is the only gear that I hear the noise. The noise is faint and I do not notice it if I am listening to the radio. I have about 600 miles on this trans.

On the first G56 in my truck, I didn't notice any noise in 5th gear but the trans only lasted 400 miles.

Thanks for the replies, yes this noise is very faint and can only be heard with the radio/fan off and at low speeds when there is less road noise. Truck has 3500 on it and seems to be getting fainter, and possibly comes and goes now. I gotta get my trailer on this thing and get it broken in!!! I suspect it is just bur on a gear that will wear in with some miles.

just curious

What happened to the first one?

My First G56 Problems

At about 300 miles the symptoms were:

1) Very difficult to get into 1st or 2nd gear from a standstill - sometimes real hard!

2) A growling noise when the clutch was released in neutral - was getting progressively louder

3) If in 1st or 2nd gear and the clutch was pushed in, the truck would not coast smoothly. The truck would lurch as if the clutch was not disengaging completely.

By the time I got the truck back to the dealer it had a bit more than 400 miles on it. The dealer is 75 miles away from my home. The dealer never did tell me what was wrong with the trans. They replaced it with a new unit. However, it took them 2 weeks to get the part and do the job. This was in early to mid Sept. They actually had the truck in their shop longer than I had the truck at home. I wasn't pleased.

I will say that I have about 700 miles on the new trans and everything seems fine except for the faint clicking (almost a buzz) in 5th gear.
