I have a 2005 3500 w/ a G56 six speed transmission. Since new (I have 7000 miles on the clock ) I get a ticking noise in fifth gear. Sometimes it is more noticible than others. If I slightly push the gear shift lever to the right the noise goes away, but comes back as soon as I let go of the lever. If anyone could tell me if this is normal for the G56 that would be great. I least then I could relax. Thanks a lot.

Only in 5th and goes away when you push on the shifter? Suspect it is either the shift fork or the synchro hub. 5th gear is direct drive so the countershaft should not be in play. In any case have your dealer look at it.

Another possibility may be a small burr on one of the plastic gears. :-laf

I have it as well. I get a rattling in 5th and 6th when coasting in gear. Moving the shifter will quiet it. My G56 is also making lots of constant noise in 3rd and 5th no matter the rpm.

G-56 also clicks in 5th on my '05. 5 2500 with 4,220 miles (but, so did the NV 5-Speed in my '99 Dakota, and the 2 replacement gear boxes that DC installed under warranty). As for my G-56, it shifts real nice so think I'm going to leave it alone - - - until something grenades itself.

mine does the same thing. if i rest my forearm on the shift lever while wearing my jacket i get a loud buzzing noise in any gear. i also hear a slight pinging noise, like a high tension wire or when walking on a frozen lake. the noise goes away when i push in the clutch. i felt my u-joints after driving a while and they weren't hot, so i'm assuming it's not them.

My G56 makes a buzzing noise in 5th gear. Oddly enough, sometimes acceleration will cause the noise and other times letting off of of the throttle will bring on the buzz. The noise is more noticable with a load. transmission has about 1400 miles on it.

For anyone with a manual, if you drive with your hand resting on the shift lever you will be preloading the shifter fork mechanism and will lead to early transmission shifter wear.

Good habit to get into to - shift and then take your hand off of the shifter.

No strange noises coming from the transmission, but I still have less than 2000 miles on her since the purchase in June. My buddy has a '05 3500 DRW with the NV5600 and his transmission makes a whole lot more noise than mine does!

I do have a strange intermittant sound from behind my dash though. I'm glad it's not constant because it'd drive me crazy. I figured I'd give her some more break in time before I get more serious about it.

Hopefully your transmission sounds are just growing pains?
