Most people are going to be faster (feel like more power and torque) off the line in an auto. You can just put your foot into it and it will shift itself. Also the comparison between the gearing of the 4 speed auto, and the 6 speed G56 is completely different (look at Klenger's gear chart: http://www.klenger.net/dodge/general-reference/gear-speed-calculator.xls)
The bottom line is what do you prefer to drive and what is your primary use for your CTD. If you don't like shifting, or do 90% of your driving in town, the auto is a good choice. If you tow heavy and regularly, and don't mind the shifting, the G56 may be the way to go.
I've owned both autos and manuals while towing my fifth wheel and I just prefer the manual 6 speed. Don't have to worry too much about transmission temps, and the stress on the auto, and I don't mind shifting... JMHO...
