AFE Megacannon Questions

Lately there have been a few parallel—shall I say 'spirited?'—discussions on the boards about my company, my company's products, my company's customer service, my employees and even my oldest son and Manager of Sales, Colin Banks. Gee, not that I take this stuff too personally, but I think there was even a reference to 'the old man' somewhere in there.

For the record, I'm 58 and feel like 28.

In composing a response to all the material that's out there, my first inclination was to pick out the challengers and answer each one, correct the misperceptions, rail against the stuff that's frankly way off-base, and defend the Banks name. But that seemed a mighty intricate task, and a couple days' reflection mellowed the idea. I think I went through something close to the five stages of grief, but it went more like:

1. Denial

2. Anger

3. Testosterone

4. Sleep

5. Acceptance

Now that that's out of the way, I will answer the themes that dominate these threads, and hope it provides clarity to those of you who take the time to read it:

Aftermarket product manufacturers are like sports teams. Guys and gals have their favorites, for a variety of reasons both logical and emotional. I'm not trying to shake anybody's allegiance to a 'team,' but I do believe in fair play. All I ask is that anyone who's already parked his loyalty with a competitor not try to uplift his own team by bashing mine.

If you have a genuine gripe about Banks, that's another story. A week ago, Colin sincerely asked that complaints be emailed to him directly at cbanks@bankspower.com. To date, no one who identified himself as a TDR Forum participant has done so. Does that tell you something?

If you have a concrete problem and all you want to do is discuss it on the boards here, spread it to other sites, and beam it to the moon and back, that's fine. At least it's real. But if you want it resolved, we gotta know about it, and you have to tell us!

I get to that third stage of grief—and believe me, it ain't a pretty state—when people post second-hand and unconfirmed stuff, vague gossip, or a private agenda veiled as fact.

In 2001, the United States is gripping the shreds of its freedoms. That means anybody still can complain about any company. Anybody still can sue any company. Anybody still can have a h***-on for any company. It does not mean the ill-will is justified. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.

Let's talk a few specifics. Somebody said Banks has a history of complaints with the Better Business Bureau. Yes, that is correct. To be accurate, we have had one complaint a year filed with the BBB for each of the past three years. That's as far back as their records go. Each complaint was resolved between the parties, and not pursued by the BBB. If you ask me what was the nature of those complaints, I honestly don't know. All I can tell you is that there were three complaints in three years, out of 114,841 orders filled.

The five people from my company who are registered to participate in the TDR Forums didn't suddenly come to life because of the posts. We regularly look at the threads. It's a great way to take the pulse of the market in which we toil. We don't post too often, because we don't regard the Forums as a place to grab free advertising, under any guise. If we have something to say, it is attributed openly. Colin attempted to get his post in earlier than it appeared, but due to technical circumstances it was delayed by a couple of days. (And, to the person who referred to it as an 'imitation apology,' you are wrong, Sir. You know my name, but I don't know yours, so I must call you, respectfully, Sir. )

To clear any smoke that may be lingering about my status as an advertiser with Turbo Diesel Register, it's easy to see we are not granted favoritism, nor have we threatened to pull out of the magazine because we don't get any. I don't subscribe to arm-twisting as a tactic. There are such things as business ethics. A set of principles sometimes creates difficulties in business—hell, in life—but I actually find it makes decisions a whole lot easier. So, Banks remains both a TDR advertiser and uncensored subject for the discussion boards.

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion about whether the quality, reliability, safety and performance of my company's products justify the price. All my products meet or exceed federal emissions standards, and further comply with California's more stringent code. We build products to last. Many outlast the vehicles they equip. The best I can offer is an open invitation to you all: view our product line on our web site; order a free test report; visit our facility in Azusa, California, any weekday; check out our stuff in the flesh, here or at a Banks dealer; and decide for yourself if the value is there.

Then, speak your piece about Banks, pro or con. A lot of people do. You can see for yourself at peoplesay.html. All these quotes are attributed—not with screen handles, but right out there, with first and last names and hometowns.

Well, I've said my piece. Maybe I can get to that fourth stage now, and wake up firmly planted in the final one, ready to attack another day.

Thanks for reading.

Welcome aboard, Gale. I appreciate your efforts to resolve any legitimate problems customers have had with your company. As ugly as this has gotten I do believe that the open communication will be advantageous for all people involved.

Welcome Aboard Gale

Nice response and the Banks products that I've seen look first class to me .

Cheers,

Bob

Excellent rebutall, Gale.

I would've liked to read the draft of that message during stage 3 :)

To be commended

It takes alot of b@lls to look the dragon in the mouth. It commands alot of respect. Good on ya Gale. #ad

As suspected, the actual complaints that have arisen were not found to be from TDR members, some of whom expressed their ultimate displeasure. That is unfortunate. I hope that this will resolve the recent problems mentioned here.

Glad to have you onboard.

Nice Job

Very nicely put Gale. It is amazing, when called to the table, most people won't show-up.

I super to see there are still some great men left on the earth. Hopefully this is put to bed... Great to have you on board Gale!!!!

I Like Your Style

Gale-

I've never owned or used any of your products, but after reading your rebuttal and reply, I darn sure like your style!

I agree that people who have a beef with me need to speak up and let me know who they are so I can solve their problems. You can't fix a problem or settle a beef unless you know what's wrong. I am a co-owner of a small shop that works on Harleys, street rods, trucks, and God only knows what will come in next. I like for people to look me in the eye and tell me what they want or think. That sounds like what you are saying.

I commend you on your statement and position.

Dave Morris

Gale, thanks for 'coming out'. That alone helps me a lot! At first I was going to respond to your invitation but then I figured I've cured the problems(with other products) and there wasn't anything left to do. I know I have some very legitimate gripes and I've bashed Banks a lot out of total frustration - everything I wrote on this board was factual and I believe was all justified. My problems drug out for several months in 97 and I will get back to you as soon as I have time to get it all down. I couldn't help but to feel that Banks Co. didn't give a hoot about all my work and time that was wasted back then. Their was never an apology then, even when your customer support people admitted to me that there were problems and lack of research in my kit. Thank again, and I will try to get the e-mail to you next week. Craig

Gale, thanks for the very candid and thoughtful response. This one seems to have come from the heart. I hope the problems that have been expressed on this forum can be put to bed for good.

Nice response... ...

My main "beef" has been resolved as of this week. I had a "beef" with customer service that was lacking to say the least when I inquired about 1½ years ago on something. I was actually hung up on. Does this mean I will recommend Banks to everyone now? No not at all, what I will do is recommend them all and let the end user decide which way he wants to go. For some people Banks stuff works for their needs, as I have said in my previous posts good for them. Me personally, I require a tad bit more power then the PowerPack would give me (and cost is not good either) so I will keep saying as I always have... ... Edge, TST, Bluechip, JRE, Diesel Dynamics, DTT, Goerend Bros, Performance Diesel, Piers Diesel Research, Genos (I am missing someone I know)are all excellant companies to deal with in regards to customer service. Which is something I am big on. IF (key word here) there truely has been a change at Banks then maybe in the future they can be mentioned with the others. Most people only know of Banks when they get their "first" diesel due to the advertising etc. , as Gale stated above he belives in fair play so I am sure he will agree his company is not the only company out there. And in my replies I never mention just Edge products because thats all I use "box" wise, but I state TST, BlueChip are in the same league if you were to go back and read the old posts. But when someone wants more power its not as simple as ok here take this box. Important factors are sometimes left out, regards to warrenty concern, driving habits, if there is towing involved, elevation, and a multitude of other things.

Now for my "personal" experience that relates to this thread... ... This week I wanted to see if things truely had changed as Colin indicated, so I went to the website and inquired about the High Ram intake only using a "Get information" link. I made no mention of the TDR or referenced to my user name KatDiesel. My email says "Eric Howard" on it so only way they would have seen my user name was "katdiesel@home.com" if they looked at the email properties. Well roughly three days of emails went by and everytime I had a reply within the same day (during buainess hours). I thought that was a good start. In the first email they tried to tell me that it was designed to work with the PowerPack system etc, etc but they would sell it seperatly ($300). On my first reply I mentioned I needed no addtional fueling enhancements as my plate was full. So the salesman dropped it right then and there, didn't try to sell me more then I wanted. I also had a few "special" requests in regards to shipping and form of payment, and he went out of his way to accomidate my needs and I already have a tracking number in my hand. He also stated I could return it if needed if it didn't fit what I intend to use it for, even tho it will be about a months time before I find out. I have my boost gauge tapped into my intake horn vertically on top, with the Air BullDog hood coming it will not clear (I don't think) with the fitting on top and the hose sticking out, so since I needed a new intake horn I felt this was a good enough excuse to look into the HighRam. Just like a couple hail dents in my hood gave me enough reason to get the new hood. So I asked about the height of the Banks one and he said it was a bout 1 inch higher then stock (the fact he knew the answer impressed me) and that if it doesn't fit when I put the hood on I can return it, no questions asked. He told me to print the email and save it in case I have any problems doing so. I talked to Doug and and he says it should clear ok with the Banks High Ram installed, so most likely will not be returning it.

At one time I was going to attempt to grind off the Banks name on the intake and paint it, but I am inclined to leave it on. So far my "new" experience has been pretty decent. Whether or not it stays that way is another story. So I think to follow up on all this, from time to time I will inquire about this and that, using a different email and being completely anymous and seeing if this is a regular thing.

But for now, I truely am impressed. There are six Banks employees signed up Gale, Colin, Andrew, PeterT, and two others from engineering. I have seen at least one Banks employee logged onto the forums everyday this week so far.

So for now, nice rebuttal and reply Gale lets hope it stays for the better. Anyone who has had a beef with Banks please take them up on their offer, I am curious to see how it works out. As I said in the begining of this post, my "personal" beef has been resolved for the most part.

Eric D. Howard

Well said Mr. Banks. I have to admit, i had problems with your customer service a few years back.

But after reading your response and seeing that you are a "Real"person and not a "Corporation", i have to say you have proved to me that you care about your customers and what they thik of you.

What happened in the past, happened in the past. I have not had the need to order any of your products latley, but if i do, i wont think twice this time. Thanks for taking the time to set the record straight.

It's an embarrassment to me to have all these TDR members bashing Banks then not coming forward to speak directly to Banks. Reminds me of a bunch of old ladies gossiping behind someone's back but afraid to speak to them directly. Seems as though many times I've been the only one in an entire Banks related thread to stick up for their excellent products and service, sometimes it made me feel way out of place. I will continue to recommend and use Banks products, my experience with them is enough for me. -Bill

Mr. Banks my name is Bill Kondolay and sir I do have an issue with Banks that is not better solved behind closed doors as it is already being marketed in a public forum.

The issue is warranty or implied warranty. Shrouding products behind the Magnus-Moss Act is nothing short untrue and dishonest in my opinion, especially if used in conjunction with power enhancement products not voiding drive train warranty. Now let me clarify what I mean.

I have done lots of transmission work for customers with Banks power enhancements and I can tell you right here and now based on the transmission carnage I saw, the power enhancements caused the failure.

Anytime you increase the hp on the Dodge Cummins diesel engine you are going to adversely affect the transmission or engine, fuel pump, turbo, etc.

Now I realize that there are other companies out there selling power enhancements, however i have observed the bigger the company the more they seem to wrap themselves with the Magnus-Moss act.

Now I realize we are grown ups and generally speaking most us the tdr membership know if we add hp to something above factory specifications, something has got to give. The higher the hp the more chances there are that something has to give.

However as a consumer even if I were aware of some of the possible dangers I may encounter and a company as established as Banks tells me otherwise, and I trust you to be telling me the truth both in your literature and your words, am I a fool?

Ultimately shouldn’t the company and the owner take some responsibility if their literature and words directly caused me to take the path i chose, as i purchased the products in good faith trusting you and your representatives not to mislead me.

I do not know how to do the darker letters to show the quotation, this is how it transferred.

Frequently Asked Questions

Service

"Will installing a Banks product on my vehicle affect the vehicle manufacturer's warranty or smog certification?Banks' Promise: All Banks products are backed by our warranty, reputation and history of customer satisfaction since 1958. The installation of a Banks Power system will not void your vehicle warranty. Banks products are emissions-tested and legal in all 50 states. "

The above is a quotation taken from your web site Mr. Banks, my question to you is very simple. What does the above answer to the question in the quote mean? If a consumer has an engine failure or transmission failure do to the power enhancements who pays for it if

Cummins or Chrysler denies warranty, Banks? or the consumer? Or is this the part where the customer gets directed to use the act and try and fight Chrysler and or Cummins in court.

I don’t have an issue with the banks products, as a lot of my customers have these products, whether i like them or dislike them is not an issue, what i have a problem with is what the above quotation implies.

Mr. Banks

I think its great for the post. But for you to say "We don't post too often, because we don't regard the Forums as a place to grab free advertising, under any guise", Doesnt make alot of sense to me? Banks is talked about all the time on the TDR, people have questions about your product all the time. Who would be better to answer questions about Banks then a Banks rep?? I dont think people would think your trying to get "free advertiseing", not with a company your size. Im not buying that.

But hey WTH do I know, you got the big company not me. I guess your doing something right! ;)

Bill K.

Hey Bill K. are you O. K. . Nice and civil ??? Very good question, lets see what Gale Banks has to say. I would like a Banks 14cm housing w/ big head wastegate. Your buddy, Sam.

Surprised this thread is so "inactive"???? Would love to hear some stories, experiences..... I stated mine up above.

So heres your chance to speak up and get some resolution.....

Gale banks talks back.

Thank you for your straight foreward reply on this topic. Several years ago I had a legitimate customer service problem that was finally resolved after much effort on my part. Hopefully things have changed.
