Gallons of Paint Calculations ?

BIL BIG asked me to post these

Nora ( BIG's Daughter) 750 yard shot 300 win mag 180 gr. Partition. BIG said it was an old Bull that had a Giant Body, but it seems that it just lacked the genetics to produce the rack for a true trophy only a 4x4, good herd cull, Nora is a meat hunter, and it seems a Damn fine shot. She asked her Father for some assistance, a BIG moment for Father/ Daughter

Danny (13 years old) 425 yard shot 30/06 150 gr. Partition, Mule Deer Buck a very typical high mountain Montana buck, 4x4, 8 point or 4 point depending where your from ? Big was pretty emotional about this young mans prize and didn't give the spread. This young man was on his First Big Game hunt, I have to add that Danny has stolen the hearts of the entire family. Big and Penny took him in to their home and hearts to help out a Military Vet, and ended up feeling like they have another Son. He is quite a young man!!

Dave BIG's long time Trucking Pard and according to him his Better Man at BIG's Wedding, using BIG's Shoulder Cannon 875 yard shot 338/378, 250 gr. Partition 6x5 heavy Bull, huge rack base (second one like this, with huge base, this year??? New area for us) Dave and his wife Maree who has yet to shoot any game, have become an important part of the Cattle Operation, He owns his own Truck/Tractor and works for many of the surrounding Cattlemen.

Have heard other shots in the area from others in the group that haven't returned to camp yet.

Sounds like some nice hunting. My freezer is empty I can't wait till our local season starts up. This buying meat is for the birds. I could never make those kind of shots, heck I can't even see that far quite the accomplishments. I can only hope that I can enjoy some of those same memories with my daughter.

My BIL lives in a time gone by, with most all of his equipment older than he is. Where that stops is with his guns, he's not least bit timid about spending money to get the instrument to shoot like he wants it to. I have visited some of the other forums on this site, there is a man that's into jeeps with a shop that would rival most NASCAR shops, I can bet that he spent lots of money to get it and the jeeps in the condition that they are in. BIG is the same way about his guns. His optics are the best in his opinion and cost him dearly. Having a Gunsmith work on his rifles doesn't come cheap.

The point im making is you say you cant even see that far!! BIG is no different but has the optics to scrutinize whether he wants to spend the day stalking a Buck/Bull a couple of miles away, or continue looking elsewhere. Its about Guns and hunting or Shop and jeeps?

Yesterday evening the other groups brought in 3 Mule deer Bucks and an Elk 6x6 the wranglers dropped them off at my house and re-supplied for the return trip.

Before they left for camp this morning Danny had tagged a 6x5 Bull, finishing off a first Big Game hunt with a nice Buck and Bull in two days, pretty good for a 13 year old young man!!

BIG I heard was pretty emotional about the taking of both game species by Danny.

We heard a funny story about the F&G check of the permits when Danny took his Elk, the F&G were in the area and came to check the tags and license. Gail knows both of them from town, Danny has a long, long last name Gail often calls Danny by the nickname alphabet or eye chart. The F&G people had stopped our wranglers on their way in for tags, they noticed Danny's long last name on his Buck tag. When they were checking the Elk tag and Danny's license they played a joke on him.

They questioned Danny about his Buck that was shot just the day before? They acted like the Buck was a small fork horn Buck, Danny assured them that it was much bigger than a fork horn. They asked him if he was saying that they didn't know their job? Danny said that he was correcting them on it, not that they couldn't do it. One agent acted like the Elk tag was wrong, Danny has been over that permit/tag many times just dreaming about the chance that he would get to them. Danny's name had been intentionally misspelled on his clipboard. Danny pulled out his ID, obviously a youngster of 13 is not going to have very much to show who he is. Danny had his license, permit, school ID card, hunter saftey card.

The agents asked Danny if he expected them to believe that a 13 year old had taken both!! a Deer and Elk in the first two days of the regular hunting season? That they were going to check into this and get to the bottom of it. Danny took a look at his name on the clipboard and said they had misspelled it, the agent said so now we cant spell? Danny said well somebody cant!! but im me, and he started to get a little nervous. They asked him if he knew what would happen to somebody that had taken game illegally? Go to jail I suppose, but my Deer and this Elk are not illegal, just cause you cant spell im going to jail? he looked at BIG and was wanting some help from him, BIG said hey I thought that you had everything in order, im just the guy with the mules!! I didn't pull the trigger, Look officers if this young man did something wrong I didn't know anything about it, its all on him!! They really had Danny going when one of the F&G officers said Look!! it was me that misspelled the name, he's legal. When Danny noticed BIG and the others laughing he got after BIG, the officers gave Danny his tag ends and Permits back and welcomed him to the Brotherhood of Big Game Hunters.

My Sister was telling me that Danny had gone to Gail at the campfire and thanked him for this opportunity of a lifetime, and that he was happy that Gail was his Best Friend. Penny said that Gail went to tears, and that they are!! the best of friends. Danny has legally gone back to his Parents and BIG and Penny are no longer Danny's legal Guardians, that alone was a pretty hard thing for my Brother and Sister to have had happen, they have become so attached to him.

I didn't add that the Elk was taken with the same 30/06 180 gr not the 150 gr for the Buck, Partition at 200 yrds. I think that what made this even more special for BIG is that the rifle used was his first big game rifle that his Father gave him when he started to hunt a Rem 721

Two more Elk and another Mule Deer, sorry didn't get the particulars on them. I actually had to work today!! Obama makes stupid calls at the most inopportune times.

Sister Penny filled both tags Elk and Mule deer within 30 seconds start to finish. She spotted an Elk said Wow there's a nice one!! before BIG even got to look at it BOOM!! Oh look!! there's his Cousin BOOM!! and dropped a mule deer. Brother BIG is going to have to do something SPECTACULAR!!! to keep her bragging at bay.

Well, I wouldn't want them folks shootin' at me. 425 yards is a fair piece, 750 yards is from 'nother zip code!

Applaud loudly using the Nosler Partitions, the original "premium" bullet, and still knockin' game flat allllllllll these years later. More modern bullets offer higher BC's, and the option of no lead, but if I were restricted to one bullet for a once in a lifetime hunt - it'd be a partition.

As an aside, I got roped into loading for one of those 30-378 Weatherby Magnums. Judas Priest what a miserable thing to shoot from the bench. Over 110-grains of slow powder (settled on 50 BMG), all for 'bout 200 fps over what a 300 Win Mag will do - not worth it.
