As you may have seen, South Korea has thousands of M1 Garands and thousands more carbines they want to sell back to the US. The Obama administration has put the brakes on this, using all the suspect excuses. Personally, I would LOVE to have a Garand. I know they're out there now, but the prices are way out of my league. I think these old warhorses need to come home and fall into the hands of us "gun nuts" who will cherish and revere them as they should be. How many of you have a politician running on "I'm pro 2nd Amendment"? I have Dirty Harry and have emailed him to ask that he prove his claims of pro-gun and work to overturn this asinine decision by Obama and his minions. It's a long shot, but if enough enthusiasts write their senators and reps, maybe it will happen.

Moderators, this is a GUN issue with political undercurrents. Please leave it in the GUNS forum where more gun enthusiasts will see it. Thank you!

AMink,

I am proud to be keeping a few of J. C. Garand's children safe and sound. They are a magical piece on your shoulder and everyone that has any thoughts about what these represent should carry one to help understand their significance for us as so many of the Greatest Generation did for us today.

Are there any factual records of their use in crimes, or is it because they load automatically and therefore are guilty by design?

The only time that I saw one used in something even close to a crime was Clint Eastwood's front yard defense scene in Gran Torino. But I have no stats to back this up.

Have you looked at the CMP to get one?

I haven't, but just saw the add in the American Rifleman and will be looking into it. Can you imagine all the idiot thugs running around with smashed thumbs? It could be a covert plan to stop gangs!

Another fun thing to do is get one of the part identification handbooks and try to figure out the pedigree on the one that is in your hands, it is amazing, but don't expect an as issued piece to fall into your hands, Uncle Sam made em work, but all matching wasn't required.

I put one in the hands of a freshly printed USMC and he said something to the effect of: they used to use these? Then it was prone and squeeze time, that was fun.

Yup- a REAL rifle, NOT a Mattel!

Ahhh, these kids nowadays- whatchu gonna do... ? :)

Bill,

I enjoy caring for my walnut stocked, cartouched, mixed parts pieces and it is a kick to share them, then try to outshoot the young whippersnappers!

The ones that make a decision for what ever reason, stand tall, put up with and pass basic, complete their AIT and wear our uniform, I do what ever I can. We have sent care packages to the young USMC mentioned above while on tour, contributed to a pack for an Air Force Reservist on tour from work and never been so proud as when our Son completed basic and AIT this year SC Army National Guard, we attended his family day, basic training graduation and AIT graduation. The WWII Veterans attended Basic Gradaduation, very special.

Back to our regular programing.

One thing the old rifles don't have that most modern rifles do are kick pads or recoil pads. These babies are either wood or a small metal strip on the rear of the stock. The men that carried the Garand, Mauser and the Mosin Nagant were tough and had shoulders of solid rock. I have all three and after a day at the range I am sore, I can't imagine firing one these day after day the way they did. Speaking of the 03A3 I hope to add one to my little collection soon.

Anyone interested in military surplus ammunition for the Garand or 03A3 there has been alot pop up on Gun Broker. Most of it is running about . 50 cents a round.
