Questions about a Kubota diesel..I know I know

Anybody do this, or any info with this kinda stuff? It looks fun as heck. Wish I lived back east so that I could have done this growing up.

Any of them run diesels?

What's stopping you? From looking at your profile your not much younger than me.

Every September there is a small Antique tractor/steam show. They have antique tractor pulls on Sat. and the garden tractors on Sun. after the parade. They've even had girls as young as 6 or 7 pulling. They do pretty good considering they don't weigh much.

I've only seen one diesel. It wasn't on a lawnmower chassis. Looked to be a Yanmar w/ turbo and staight pipe. Sounded great.

Cub Cadet Pulling Forum

Being the IH Cub Cadet fan I am, I must point out that Deere is actually a Cub... probably a Model 71. Cubs have the automotive pressure plate clutch and driveshaft transmission like a car so they are favorites and can handle the power.

That link takes you to www.ihcubcadet.com forum that has a section on pulling and performance. There are several turbo diesels out there... and believe me the get every bit as wild as the full size pullers. Black smoke abound!! Midwest Super Cub sells hi-po parts and stuff like that. Names like Don Vogt are the big guns in the sport.

The folks of the NGTPA take this ultra seriously and its a big thing around the midwest. Polished wheels, super trannys, and big dollar motors are the norm. Most diesels are based on Cubs as the had the 782D model that had a 3 cyl Kubota option.

I have three Cubs, Model 72, 122, and 123. I restore them and use them. There are also events called plow days where hundreds show up with Cubs and 1-Bottom plows on three point sleeve hitches. The can plow up a 40 acre field in no time flat. It looks like a big tractor did it when they are done. I went to one and was impressed as they did a demo with a turbo diesel Cub. This years was rained out and the plowing couldn't occur.

Anyway, this sport is as serious as any motorsport out there.

Here is one of many links to the Cub Cadet forums that shows what plow day is. Scroll down and you will see a guy named Travis who has a Turbo Charged IH Cub Cadet pullin a plow. You can see his stack puffin a good bit of smoke :) . I'll try and post some pics of his turbo setup on the tractor... but I'll need their permission as they do not want them used for just anything. I think I can get permission since I belong to the IHCubCadet Forum.

Garden tractor pullers

Damn fun to watch. Local fairs and festivals have them a couple times a year.

Age of pullers run from 6 to 80, so give it a whirl.

(If they have them in Texas)

Nixter

I saw a pull up in Maine where kids did this... .

This one kid had 3 Kohler industrial engines on his tractor.

The big kids used ricer car 4-bangers..... I didn't see any diesels or forced induction, NOS. BORING!!

I would be MORE then willing to try this if they had it down here, but in Texas at the county show, they have 4 attractions:

1) Livestock judging

2)Carnavel & Rides

3)Country Music singer (first saw Willie Nelsion at a country fair)

4)Crafts Contest

They just started having lawn mower races, but I'll keep my ears out for this.

Oo.

Ncostello,

I scrolled down last night after your first post, and saw his name, but couldn't find a link to his site or anything.

Sometimes its refered to as Quarter Scale Pulling. This site has a small photo gallery with some hi-po models.

Quarter Scale Pulling Website

Alot of the top classes run $4000 alcohol motors. Diesels are not as popular, especially turbo diesels, but they are out there. I'm attempting to get some photos from a person who added a turbo to the Kubota diesel in his Cub 782D. The plumbing is very neat and makes you want one.

Tell you what... it wouldn't take too much to organize a pull. Some small events use a flat slab sled with a hand rail down the middle. As the sled progresses, a specified number of people step aboard the sled to add weight. Makes a lot of fun for everyone. You dont really need big dollar pullers to have fun at the fair. Just alot of advertisement to get local folks to bring their home tractors.

I've seen communities close by have "lawnmower" races at fairs and such. Nothing real souped up... just typical mowers around a track having fun. People seem to like it here in the Midwest. They also do slow races... see who makes it across the line last without stopping or using the clutch. They throttle down and choke the engines out so they move very slow. Its a competitive event also that is safe.

Why dont you try something like that in your area. You'd have fun I bet. :) :) Little tractors and county fairs are always a good combination here in the midwest.

I could buy a spare Cummins for that price!!!!

Living here in Texas, you have an advantage for this kind of stuff, pulling is big back there, and unheard of here. :{

I read through the rule book last night for the NGTPA, and looks like I could put twins on a 1700cc Cummins, IF i could fit it under the hood!!! Oo.

One day I might do somthing like this for fun, what a great way to get around at the drag strip, insted of using an ATV or scooter, I got a DIESEL DEERE!! :D

This is all I could get right now. Its the factory installed 3cyl Kubota diesel in a Cub Cadet 1782 garden tractor... along with a custom installed turbo charger. And it will make smoke under load!! I have no idea bout the specifics.

Thanks for the pic, that's pretty darn cool!!!

talk about smoking!!! That's more then my truck smokes!!! :{

Deo Read ("TheRabbitTree") has a Kubota lawn tractor (~17hp?) and we plan on putting the 38hp injectors out of a skid steer in it along with a turbo or two... . that is if we ever finish our truck projects.

It smokes now while cutting down tall grass... . just imagine what it'll do with some fatter injectors in it. :D

I thought about taht too. When I read the rule book, it said something to the effect of, "no propane, water may be used though" and never said one thing about meth or NOS being NOT used. :D

mummn any info on the cub cadets or simialar with the 3 cyl kubota engines? liek what years and model #'s etc im very interested my parents kubota is cool i turned up the fule a little its hydrostatic so its fun to mow with but im not sure it would do good pulling or plowing . . i'm afraid it would ruin the pump or something ha. . but since its my parents tractor i can't ruin it ha. . so im looking for one my self. . heck i even thought of building a small garden tractor with one of my 1. 6L vw diesels or turbo deisels in it ha would be fun if i could hook a mower deck to it and mow . . need more links to diesel garden tractors. . i looked at the above links and i couldn't find much info . . all of it was gasser

oh well

lets figure this out hehe

The Cub diesels I refer to were produced by International Harvester for 1 or so years... the name Cub Cadet was purchased by the employees around 1981 and called Cub Cadet Corp. They produced the tractors until around 85 when MTD bought them. Even then they were still called International Cub Cadet... and they were the red colored series. Namely the 782's. The diesel option was dubbed the 782D. So anything 782D from 81' on was red. The IH produced models had red painted under carriage/axles while later models had black axles. The engine was the Kubota D600 I think... it was 600cc and had 3 cylinders. You can find them here and there... also on ebay. You'll see them on IH Cub Cadet forum. Not a whole lot but they are on there. If you go to www.ihcubcadet.com scroll down the page... click on the forum link, you can go to the open forum or classifieds and find them. Some later MTD models were called 1772's I think but were the same diesel basic tractor with a few changes. All had the famous Cub rear axle from the Farmall Cub tractor... and the 582's had a hydrostatic drive motor instead of the direct driveshaft powering the axle drive input.

The IHcubcadet website is specifically interested in only those cubs produced by IH during its reign. Only 782's... which were mainly produced by CCC and MTD are allowed in discussions. The forum isn't interested in all Cub Cadets... only those from International specifically. There is a big difference with the exception of the 782's which were IH's original design.
