HTT Stage 3 trouble.

Looking for the best price on Superchips Microtuner

Not familiar with the Garrett Turbos. Will these mate right up to an OEM Exhaust manifold from our CTD's? If so, what model/models would compare well to say an HX-40? TIA for your help!

Jeff

Thanks for the site references bmoeller! My question is will a GT42 bolt on up to my stock manifold? Not knowing all the mapping stuff and how to really read all that info how would this turbo compare to a Holset Turbo?

I don't know about which one will fit up to our little goats, but I DO KNOW that Garrett (air research) has some really great durable turbos! Back 20+ years ago we used to take a Deere 4440 stock, take the cover off the back of the bosch inj. pump, loosen the 10mm nut and turn the screw in a round and a half or 2 and that little turbo would make a 130 hp stock tractor pull over 400 hp on the dyno (PTO hp) on a 1000 shaft. That little TO4B would finally run out of air. When you hooked up in D range to the sled and shifted from 1 to 2 "Hang ON!" You talk about turbo bark!, unintentionally though. Whew! And yes, it lived and was did this way several times. It continues to run at 180 hp. everyday with thousands of hours on it and the turbo has NEVER been replaced. Yes I know this is long, I'm just saying that if they do make a replacement it would definately be worth checking into.

Smokewagon, great to hear these are tough turbos! Thats what I need, was planning on getting a HX-40 but my truck is a daily driver and I do drive in Denver traffic daily, kinda concerned about being in and out of the turbo a ton and the longevity of the HX-40.

Anyone know who I could call or talk to that could tell me what bolts up to these beasts? I was going to wait to post this guys site til possibly after I made a purchase with him to make sure he was a good vendor for everyone else but maybe ya'll will see something eye catching that I should try out. I spoke with the owner last week, seems nice, knows turbos (or sure impressed me anyway) but it sounds like he does a ton of ricers and has limited knowledge of the CTD's. His site is a little hard to navigate but he does have some cool stuff on there!

Like I said, I dont have any affiliation with this company and have not made a purchase so I dont know about the quality of his services. If anyone knows about this company I would like to hear more!

Thanks everyone, have a blessed Easter!! Oo.

Just my . 02 but it seems that most of the failures we were hearing about a year or so ago were due to a bad batch of 40's. I think for most drivers the 40 is probably a sweet deal. There are a couple of guys running piers modified 40's around here and it is a very nice charger.

just as a compairson... my box stock HX40 has about 70K miles on it and I live and drive in the mountains. . very twisty and steep hills. . in and out of the throttle often... I dive it like a slot car

I just took it off and sent it to Piers to do his Piersafy on it. . [not back yet]. .

sure you can go with others . . but IMHO the HX40 has received a somewhat bad rap .

I think Gary's right here, to a point. I am by no means a fan of HX40 'chargers, but many of the 40s I've seen huffed have simply been pounded with too much boost. Waste 'em at 36 - 38 PSI, keep 'em off the 400 HP+ trucks, and the problems by and large vanish.

In addition to Garrett, Schwitzer builds some the toughest puffers going. Yardley's B1 series uses Schwitzer wheels, and these units are virtually indestructible. I believe that Pius even has a Schwitzer hybrid kicking around.

Does Pius have a web site we can snoop around in?Just curious as I don't want to call him since I ain't ready to buy just yet.

Glenn

Guys... Pius doesn't do computers... he is a small one man shop... [actually 2]. . and he is busier than a one legged frog in a butt kicking contest. . so unless your serious about buying his wares or having him build something. . [and he is a master]. . suggest you don't bother him... JUST AN FYI from someone who has been there and seen him in action. . I don't know how he gets anything done.

The HX-40 seems to be a really good charger but like everything else it has it's limits, that is why Kurt came up with the B-1, Piers with the 50/55, and now Pius with his chargers all of these guys know there stuff and we all know that. You have to ask yourself were am I now and were am I going with my power, Piers talked me out of a 40 and into building my own Twins because of the "were are you going with your power" statement.

You just can't run my amount of fuel on a 40 and not blow it up, if I had my wastegate setup it might live but EGT's would be past 2000.

Garrett turbochargers are probably one of the best brands out there but beware when changing to a non-Holset unit!!

There is quite a bit of calculating that needs to be done to determine if a given turbo will work efficiently, needs controls, etc. on your engine.

Unless you have worked out all of the details I would suggest sticking with Holset - those have been pre-matched to our engines.

jrandol,

i was looking at that turbo as well on ebay. i emailed the guy and he says that all the info that is listed is what is on the turbo. i am thinking probably HX 50 or 55 but really that is just a guess.

Speaking of the Turbonetics turbocharger, I was wandering through the Turbonetics booth at EAA AirVenture in OshKosh, WI a couple years ago and they had a dodge cummins pickup with Turbonetics written all over it they were using for some R&D. I wonder if anything ever came of that, surely they would have been using their own brand of turbocharger on it, but I didn't see anything for Cummins diesels in this years products catalog.
