Went to fuel up the other day and tried to take off the fancy-spring-loaded one-quarter-turn-only fume-suppressing all-plastic gas cap, and it wouldn't snap open. Stayed shut. Just kept turning like and idiot, wound the little spring up to about 400 lb feet of torque, then the whole thing went "SNAP!!" and, dang, I just broke the stinkin' gas cap. Everything came off of it except of course the plug that stayed in the neck. Couldn't get it off to save my life. Cut up my fingers and stuff, too. So here I am kicking little white pieces of plastic around in the fueling lane with all these PSDs lined up gawking at me, with the DTE meter reading 20 and 668 miles on this tank.

Anyway, made it 30 miles to AutoNation Dodge in Irving where they fixed it with no questions asked other than "how the heck did you do that??" It is truly a helpless feeling when you have an empty tank, 1. 21 a gallon diesel, and a chunk of plastic stuck in the neck of the tank.

Anything like this ever happen to anyone else?

Anyway:rolleyes:

Fritz, it makes me wonder if the vacuum relief valve on top of your fuel tank module isn't working. Your tank isn't collapsing by any chance is it?

Sudden Two Piece Fuel Cap

:rolleyes:Same thing happened with my employer's 1998 Chebby 6. 5 T. D. The Chebby fuel cap seems to be identical to the D. C. cap. I used a pair of channel lock pliers to get it off. Replaced it, and it never happened again. I agree, it's a strange feeling when it happens. :D
