All the government can do directly to the oil companies is enact a windfall-profits tax. The oil lobby is too powerful to allow heavy government regulation of an otherwise private industry.

However, government can also work to discourage the use of private automobiles. Most countries heavily subsidize and promote public transportation - not us! For what we all chipped in for I-99 in Pennsylvania, we could have purchased hundreds of buses and gotten thousands of people out of their cars.

I realize no taxes are on the fuel, lets figure . 50 for taxes, thats still only 2. 27 a gallon, stations are still over $3 here in most places, 2. 91 is the cheapest I know of. I am sure transportion costs aren't that much, couple that with the fact gasoline is selling for 2. 30 . 75/gallon less, there is only a . 23/gal spread on the wholesale market, add the . 6/gallon extra we pay for diesel in taxes thats less than . 30 more than gas. where is the extra . 45 going?? WTF, couple that with the fact all our fuel is refined here as well as comes from local wells. yes we are getting the shaft, free market big oil people on this board I am waiting to be proven wrong. I always hear the argument "supply and demand" only problem is what else are we supposed to use for fuel, its a monopoly, its one product that can't be subsistuted
