This morning on the way to work, I saw the price of gasoline had topped $2 a gallon. In the last few weeks there was an email in which someone was advocating protesting the fuel prices by boycotting Exxon and Mobil. That may be fine, but most people I know don't buy that brand anyway. Arco, Costco (from where who knows), and Ultamart are more in our price line.

Here is what I've done to protest the fuel prices, I slowed down from 70 MPH (2,000 RPMs) to 55 MPH (1,500 RPMs). That means that every minute my engine is turning 500 few revolutions. That's a 25% reduction in fuel consumption. My mileage went from 16/17 MPG to 23 MPG. That's a increase of 26%. So, if you want to protest and have it mean something slow down.

I drive about 40 miles to work (each way). At 55 MPH I'm saving a half a gallon each way (. 6 gallons). One gallon a day or four gallons a week. Multiply that by the number of people who are upset by the oil Companies and their Multi-billion dollar profits EVERY Quarter (that's three months) is not just passing on the cost of doing business.

In addition to fuel you'll save wear on tires.

And the last thing I'd like to say is that I get in the slow lane and put the cruise control on 55 and sit back and relax. A LOT less stress while driving. The time saved by driving 70 vs 55 is just a few more minutes. Leave ten minutes early and expect to get home ten minutes later.

Give this a try and see if this protest works. I am!

Sounds like a plan to me! Diesel is up to 1. 77 to 1. 80 per gallon here in Erie, PA. and its more than cheap gas, 1. 73 per gallon, what a rip off, they claim higher tranportation costs for the high diesel cost, usualy is 30 cents or so cheaper accross the state line in Ohio. Locals are saying gas might hit 2. 45 per gallon here by summer, I feel bad for west coasters, it its that bad here I cannot fathom the prices out there. Cheers Mike

I would protest by moving out of California. You cant target one specific company since the gas at the 7-11 and the Exxon station come from the same distribution point.

Hi Mike. It was an experience driving to work this morning. Even the Von's grocery trucks were passing me. I liked it that I was in a one ton dually. There isn't much that intemidates me in it. Most truckers are considerate and don't try to drive up my b***.

Last week I drove to La Vegas, Nevada from my house. I drove at 60 from the fill up in Barstow, Cal. It's about 150 some miles and the the gauge had just started to come off the full mark as I got off the freeway. In trips prior doing 70 I'd be closer to 3/4 mark. I don't know how many others will join me but the bottom line is I will paying less for the miles drivin. Thanks for the reply and see ya someday. P. S. they're predicting $3 a gallon around here by summer. :--) I'll be spending a lot more time on my motorcycle that's for sure. Later

My truck gets the same mileage at 55 that it gets at 68mph. Lower than 55 causes the mileage to fall off and faster than 70 has the same effect. Diesel is currently 1. 43 where I fuel up at.

While I don't like paying any more than I have to, and while I do think the oil companies are ripping us off at the current prices, I do think gas is a better bargan today at $1. 80 than when it went to $1. 00 in 1974 - 1976 (20 years ago). I know that my income has more than doubled since then.

You're right about the 55 and Nixon in '74. Difference is now I'm doing it to safe fuel and money. I remember that day. New Years coming back from a party in Long Beach. Getting on the freeway and going 55. Heck, we have a 60 construction zone for most of the 40 miles I go to work and almost everyone is running 80+. I'm going to stay to may orginal plan and stay at 55. Even if no one else does. I'll save some money.

Just as an FYI. . If you are doing 55 and everybody else is doing 70+, then you are creating a hazzard. Its safer if everybody did 120 than have some vehicles doing 50 and some 80. You might save a few bucks on gas, but how much are you going to spend on repairs if someone slams into the back of your truck?

I agree!!!!

I find that my truck gets about 22-23 when I run at 60 vs. 70-75 I get around 18.

Granted my truck is a 1st gen for what that's worth.

I did not find a gain driving 55 vs driving 60. I do take a slight hit driving 65 but sometimes it's safer.

Unless he is going slower than the minimal speed limit ( that is if they have one there ) he wont have to spend any money cause he wont be at fault and he wont be causing a hazard cause he hasn't broken any laws . Now it will cause the person that hits him in the rear some money . At my job we just took down all the minimal speed limit signs ( 45 ) so I guess you now can go as slow as you want and if the greater Houston area doesn't get the air pollution under control in the next two years or so ( I forgot the year I saw in paper work ) the speed limit is going back down to 55 in the greater Houston area so us folks here will have to drive 55 --------- oh I forgot most people around this area pay no attention to speed limit signs much less any other highway signs . I bet if the gas was over $2. 00 a gallon in Texas many people would be crying and since Texas is getting more and more like California I think it might just get over $2. 00 a gallon in the future.

Wayno,

I hate to disagree with you, but it is a hazard. People may, or may not slam into the back of his truck, but they will be changing lanes to avoid his truck. He may not get hit at all, but the guy who just tried to pass him, could hit someone else, or get hit while they are pulling out to pass. The smoothest, and safest traffic all flows at the same speed. No offense, Bart, it's a good idea if there isn't much traffic. Around here, (D. C area), you can get killed if you're driving too slow.

In Ca all trucks and autos pulling trailers (includes pickups) have a speed limit of 55. When I pass thru the state I drive at about 58 with a trailer attached. Most of the big trucks stay between 55 and 60 as well. The fines are too high to speed, especially if you have a USDOT number on the side. The speeders are the ones creating the hazard.

And you can get killed if you are driving too fast and he didnt say if he is driving 55 on a two lane road or a six lane freeway . Driving 55 on a two lane road and the speed limit is 70 , maybe a hazard but in some states they have cars posted a 65 to 70 and big trucks in some places 65 to 55 . Not a good thing if you get a ticket in a big truck kinda hard on your CDL . Now if he is on a road that has two or more lanes travailing the same way and is in the right lane and driving 55 ----well people will just have to move over unless your in the greater Houston area because the no driving people here want to drive well over the posted speed limit in all lanes. The motto here , I don't care about my driving record so why should you .

I live in Tracy California and have to travel 15 miles one way to go feed my stock in the morning. Every day I see 18 wheelers doing 65 to 75 on a regular basic on a 2 lane hi-way between Tracy and Mosedale Y. I'm sure they know old smokey is not around. Thier is no 55 mph speed limit with some of the big rigs, and I know they have to make time for thier pay checks. I just stay out of thier way.

Some very interesting conversations here to say the least. Thank you to the people who disagree with me and Thank you more to the one who agree. What I was advocating was that "IF" you wanted to strike back at the oil companies in protest, slowing down is just about the only way to do it. Boycotting Mobil and Exxon or not buying gas on a certain day isn't going to have any effect on them. A long term "personally" mandated slow down will. I don't want the government to step in with ANY new laws (be it gun control or speed control). A personally commitment to slowing down may not hurt the oil companies, because I believe there's millions young people who can't slow down. Every thing they do, see and hear about involves speed and being fast, but slowing down WILL slow down the rate of MY fuel consumption and slow down the drain on MY wallet. I have a CDL (and that don't stand for California Driver's License either brother). I can, do, and have run fast. Besides my wonderful Dodge, I have a 325 H. P. corvette, a 460 powered jet boat, and a Goldwing motorcycle. All three are very fast, one thing I can say for speeding is that you don't get bored:D When I speed I'm on alert for law inforcement and other dangers. But since Monday morning (yesterday;) ) I have made a commitment to myself to slow down. I stay in the right lane of a four lane (two each way), I'm curtious to truckers passing (signaling when safe to come back over). I will pull into the fast lane to let someone else on the freeway or slow down if the fast lane is not clear. And last but not least, when I get to work I'm not stressed over driving with the rest of the nuts out there triing to pass everything in front of them, doing 80+ (and I mean a lot of +) in a 60 construction zone. No, gentlemen, you can say what you want to say but doing 55 is safer by far than running 80+ with the rest of the pack. You should see some of the pileups we've had in that 30 mile construction zone. Many deaths, burning vehicles invovled in those crashs. Enough soap box, have a nice day and keep writing (I enjoy the feedback). :-{} I'm sorry to hear that Texas is getting like California (aka mexifornia):D I was thinking of moving to Abilene after I retire (if I make it that long).

Did you hear yesterday that OUR Governator wants a constitutional amendment so he can be president??? Does he have any idea what it takes to get an amendment??? He'll be too old to breath before that'll happen. OIHOP!!!

Bart,

Don't judge all of Texas by Wayno's comments. He's got this burr under his saddle blanket about the Houston area. Abilene's a whole different story! ;) :D

Rusty

Rusty, are you familar with Abilene and surrounding area? If so how's the 4 wheelin there. My brother came to visit a couple years ago and I took him out the the foot hills in the Barstow, Ca area and he bout S**** his pants on the first up trail. Once on top he said " I don't like the up hills but I don't mind the down hills" So I took him down the best of the down hills. I made him eat his words. A little while later I let him drive up and down a smaller hill and he enjoyed that. I lived in Abilene in the 60's before going into the military and thought a lot of it and Texas in general. Little town of Bradshaw, Texas was neat. I think I'd like to find five or ten acres out side of Abilene and hide from the Californians. :--) They're not all that bad. I have some great off road friends and one true friend. I guess I'm lucky

Bart,

I've lived all around Abilene (Cisco, Knox City area, Odessa) when I was younger, but never in Abilene itself. We live NW of Houston now, so I don't know how the 4 wheeling is in the Abilene area, but there are enough mesas and draws around that area to make it interesting, I would think. Maybe one of the locals from the Abilene area will post with some details.

Rusty

If you guys really like 4 wheelin, Moab is nice :)

I do agree with slowing down, and generally travel at 60-65 with my 3. 54 geared truck. I run at about 2k rpm and find that what does best. Yes if I go slower I can do a little better, but it's marginal. I still get zipped around but do use judgement, if there's a spot to go slow in I choose too normally.

Most people don't understand the whole idea of fuel economy, and frankly most people don't care... maybe at 3-4 dollars a gallon they will.

I lived in DFW for 15 yrs growing up and my experience with TX is there is not much "open range" land. Most of the state is privately owned. Here in UT it is much, much different. I like it here better, there are many pros and cons between the two, but I chose UT because the outdoor life is much better than TX. Though I miss TX, and if I could find a ranch to run there, i'd do it in a heartbeat.
