This morning on the way to work, I saw the price of gasoline had topped $2 a gallon. In the last few weeks there was an email in which someone was advocating protesting the fuel prices by boycotting Exxon and Mobil. That may be fine, but most people I know don't buy that brand anyway. Arco, Costco (from where who knows), and Ultamart are more in our price line.
Here is what I've done to protest the fuel prices, I slowed down from 70 MPH (2,000 RPMs) to 55 MPH (1,500 RPMs). That means that every minute my engine is turning 500 few revolutions. That's a 25% reduction in fuel consumption. My mileage went from 16/17 MPG to 23 MPG. That's a increase of 26%. So, if you want to protest and have it mean something slow down.
I drive about 40 miles to work (each way). At 55 MPH I'm saving a half a gallon each way (. 6 gallons). One gallon a day or four gallons a week. Multiply that by the number of people who are upset by the oil Companies and their Multi-billion dollar profits EVERY Quarter (that's three months) is not just passing on the cost of doing business.
In addition to fuel you'll save wear on tires.
And the last thing I'd like to say is that I get in the slow lane and put the cruise control on 55 and sit back and relax. A LOT less stress while driving. The time saved by driving 70 vs 55 is just a few more minutes. Leave ten minutes early and expect to get home ten minutes later.
Give this a try and see if this protest works. I am!
