Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Gauge install ? - pyrometer depth

I've got a set of Westach gauges, and am getting ready to bite the bullet and drill into the exhaust manifold for the pyrometer.



How deep should the pyrometer be set through the fitting? Just protruding? or shoved through as far as it will go? I'd figure as close to the center of the exhaust stream as possible.

My directions also said to make the tip at the center of the gas stream. That's how I installed it. If I ever do another one, I won't let it protrude so much. I'm sure it'll work just fine if you don't stick it in so much. Others have done it that way.

I made a wire depth gauge, checked it with the probe and marked it with a marker, tap just enough threads to get it in the middle of the stream, took about four threads on my dipricol to put me where I needed to be, good luck...

make shure to use a vacume while drilling to get the shavings so they dont go in the manfold beacause when you start her back up the shavings will go right into the impeler and might cause damage just thought you might need to know

Heh... ... aside from a self-induced problem with the pyrometer, the install went pretty well, got all the connections on the first try.



And discovered that I have a flaky lift pump. Starts out at zero, and will eventually pop up to 10 psi, and waver from there. Nuts. But that's why I bought the gauges in the first place.
