Just got VDO Pyrometer and Boost gauges for my 2001. 5... . Now I need any help/pointers that you all can share. I do know I will be mounting the pyro pre-turbo, should I remove the turbo so that I can get all the shavings out (or will a magnet do the jog)? If I do remove the turbo will I need a new gasket where it bolts to the exhaust manifold? Also where is the best spot to drill for the sensor?

As for the boost gauge it looks like I can use the boost preesure port for this install. Will I need any special fittings for this? Also which power source for the backlighting on the gauges works best? I do want the ability to dim the lights. If any of you have any pictures they would be very much appreciated...

Thanks for your input,

Doug S.

Jetpilot,

The pre/post turbo install location borders on a religous issue. Search the forums and make a decision.

You will need a way to get from 3/4" NPT female to 1/8" NPT female to install your boost line if you are going to use the MAP sensor location. I found a 3/4" to 1/8" brass bushing at a local supply house. Some guys use 2 bushings and step it down.

Here is a good link for install instructions.

If you drill with the engine idleing, the shavings will stay out of the hole.

BTW, what do you fly?

Ijust installed mine the other day. What I did was loosen the turbo bolts and put a piece of cardboard between the manifold and turbo. When I was done I cranked the engine over a couple of times to blow the shavings out before I tightened the turbo back up.
The boost will go where the plug is behind the fuel filter and before the map sensor.

Hope this helped, Scott

Does the trick of drilling with the engine running really work? That would sure make me feel better about not taking the turbo off.

The cardboard idea is a good one too, it sure beats removing the turbo all togehter.

I have yet to install my gauges also, they've been on the bench for a while now. If you guys could email me the tips also I would appreciate it.

o it right, remove the turbo. Would you want NordWurst wrenchies to run drill shavings thru your A320 turbines? You need a new turbo mt. gasket and oil drain gasket.
keep em flying. .
