DiPricol Optix Pyrometer

What Bugs? The only problem that we encounter is when customers wire the Pyrometer to a constant hot 12V+ source. Solution follows:

The instructions say to connect to a 12V+ BATT, and therein lies the problem. DiPricol has subsequently put a yellow sticker on the top of the instruction sheet that says to wire it to a 12V+ Ignitionn Switched source. Not everybody sees the sticker though. If you wire the gauge the the constant BATT 12V+ the gauge will never power down and the pointer it will slowly creep upward making it innacurate. This is only temporary until you unplug (power down) the gauge to let it "reboot". Obviously you want to connect to a switched power too. I am told that no harm comes to the gauge if you've had it wired to the BATT for a while. Just fix the 12V+ source and you're all set.

David,

I'm definitely buying my gauges through you guys, so no offense is intended here. I just want to make sure what I have read on this board is not an actual problem. These could all be wiring issues, but I never read about a fix within these posts, that is why I was concerned. I also understand that out of the thousands of gauges sold, there are bound to be problems.

1. ) installed three sets--1st. set went perfect 2nd and 3rd sets something went haywire with the pyros. too much headache - took them out and replaced with A/M Colbalt just my bad experience

2. ) I puchased the DiPricol Optix boost and pyro guages around May 15th. The next day I am having problems with the pyro - works ok for 30-45 minutes and then has a mind of it's own. Turn the truck off, restart, and it works fine again for the same amount of time. I contact the selling dealer the next day after installation (4 days after receiving shipment) and they can do nothing for me. I was forced to send directly to DiPricol for "testing. " So far I know nothing. Will be calling again tomorrow.

The last 2 weeks, the boost guage has a internal buzzing noise over 15-20lbs of boost. I am not having good luck with these guages. Never had problems with Ispro's in the past.

The guage did not function correctly from day 1. It has been years that the selling dealer or merchant has not sent one out right away to replace a possible bad or defective unit. (In anything I have purchased). This may very well be the DiPricol policy, and that is fine. All I know is I purchased a boost guage, pyro, and pillar mount for $360. 00 on May 14th, and have yet to have these function correctly in my truck. The pyrometer has been at Dannin since the end of May, and I had to call them to find out the unit has been dropped or whatever. It could have been done my shipping department or UPS, I am not sure. One thing I am very interested in is why the warranty sticker was missing. I have no reason to remove it.

As for the guage not working, I believe it has something to do with the servo motor. The guage would always work fine for 30-45 minutes and then act up. I could turn the truck off, restart it, and the guage would work fine again for the same amount of time. I double and triple checked the wiring. I have installed about 10 sets of various brand guages over the years.

3. ) I am having the same exact problem with my optix on my pyro. To be more detailed it really only happens when I am towing and getting up to around 1300 degrees. As soon as I get that hot for a few seconds it will go crazy. It will go down to zero then go to 1600 then 1000 etc. THis happens really fast back and forth. Once I crest the hill and let off the pedal everything goes back to normal. The only reason I'm not more concerned is that fact that my truck is stock. Keep my posted. I need to get this fixed also.

4. ) Have had similar issues here. My boost gauge rattled since new. Dealer took it back and replaced under warranty, but the new one rattles the same as the old one (if not worse... ) Danion/Dipricol said it is "normal" for the gauge mechanism to make noise... I would like to try the snubber thing as a last resort... .

I am also struggling to find a sqealing noise that is somehow related to the boost gauge. I replaced the entire plastic line and compresion fittings, but the "squeal" is still there anywhere above 20#. Any suggestions???

I'm pleased by my EGT, but twice in the few months Ive owned them I've noticed the gauge reading artificlly high. When I let the truck idle down it wont go below 500f. Turn off and back on and its right at 300f where it normally is. Weird, but so far not a big deal.

5. ) Having issues with my Optix pyro as well. Works fine for about 30 minutes. . Then is all over the map. . Sometimes over 200° off! Good thing I have a second Pyro!

Also, when I talk on my CB... Needle goes crazy. I called Dannin and they are working on the problem.

6. ) Thumbs down DiPricol

I purcased the older Dipricol EGT gauge (white dot center) which was supposed to be a match to the 2004 dash. It has never provided uniform light and is extreemely bright under the MFG name, yet dark in most other places. Yes I did check to verify that the LED is working. I contacted the company I purchased it from, they just put me off saying that is the way it is (guages aren't perfect).

I was looking for a new gauge when Dave Meheen (Diesel Power Products) directed my efforts to get in touch with Dipricol (Prab - owner) who told me he was going to fix this and kept putting me off for over 4 months - then Prab turned me over to his daughter Jenny who said I am going to sell you a new gage at dealer cost (what about what I spend on the original gauge)... . BS This was over a 5 month span.....

7. ) I just swapped out my DiPricol EGT gauge with an Isspro due to the poor lighting. If I had to do it over I'd get the Isspro's.

8. ) Also, my EGT guage DPP sent me was DOA, so I am waiting on another. May want to wait a bit and let DiPricol figure out the problem, apparently quite a few have been DOA.

These were all posted after March '06.

JohnJoyce,

Wow, you want me to respond to all of that - huh? Here goes.

1) Assuming this person had ISSPRO EV's. What was the problem he/she had? Yes, there are occasionally defects in all brands. ISSPRO I'm sure took care of it for him. Could also be that this person was wiring them wrong. The chance of 3 sets being bad are next to 0.

2) I remember this fellow. He did in fact have a problem with his gauge. This was a Optix from DiPricol by the way. Turns out the customer removed the sticker from the back of the gauge voiding the warranty. He claimed that (paraphrasing here) "it some how must have fallen off because he didn't remove it". These stickers are very well adhered and will rip if you try to remove. They don't just fall off. The warranty was voided by due to this. We had him send the gauge to the manuf. directly so he didn't have to send it to us, we send it to them, wait for a determination, and repeat the process in reverse. This customer made a stink so we contacted the manuf. again and they said that because he was <b>our</b> customer they would replace the gauge at no cost. There was some delay in getting this done, as the woman responsible for warranties was on vaca. We followed up and should have been resolved. As for the noise on the boost gauge - sounds like he has some bad luck. We have only one had this problem before on a Cummins, and the gauge was replaced if memory serves me correctly.

3) Sounds like this fellow needs to send it back. If he purchased it from us we will handle the entire thing. He may have already. I don't know. He may have purchased it from someone else. Once again - I don't know.

----- Side note: There is not much supporting information to your compilation of problems here. Did all of these customers purchase from us? Etc...

4) ???? If the customer calls the store they purchased it from they should be able to help. Another solution is to not use the boost bolt (if they are) and to drill/tap the manifold instead. That works for the 6. 0L PSD. They have the same problem when tapping into the MAP hose for the boost gauge. Squealing noise and EGT problem?? I have never heard of either of these happening. If he's our customer he should call us. That's why people buy from us and not on ebay. We're here to take care of your service needs long after the sale.

5) Sounds like he needs a replacement, assuming that it was wired correctly. Many people run a 12V+ to the pyrometer and not a 12V+ Ign. switched. This will cause the gauge to climb, requiring it to be rebooted. If that's not the problem then he needs to send it back. CB's. Ahh yes. This happens with all brands of gauges. All I can say is that the installer needs to make sure that the CB Ant. cables are far away from the gauges and cables. The RF energy from any 2-way radio can cause this. If I hold my Nextel close to the wiring of the gauges in my truck, key the mic. , it happens. I also have the same problem w/ my stereo. Just before my phone rings, I can hear the speakers popping. I know the phone is about to ring. And when I'm on the phone the stereo makes noise. That's just something that I have learned to live with. There's nothing easy that can fix this problem.

6) The white dot center gauges were discontinued over a year ago and they are no longer available of sold. This is no longer an issue. (Old one here) I can't speak for the rest of this because is does not pertain to DieselManor.

7) ISSPROs are a nice gauge. We were the ones who recommended that they come out with a Dodge Match gauge for over 2 years. They did and it has been very popular. The DiPricol OPTIX are a good gauge too with very few problems, although reading this post would lead you to believe otherwise.

8) All Optix gauges are tested before they leave the plant I am told. Best to contact DPP.

Once again, most of these issues here aren't something that I can really comment on to their entirety. I did my best. We at DMI are totally committed to our customers satisfaction. If anyone has a problem wit ha product, they should contact us. No smoke and mirrors here. Our return policy is clearly posted on our web site. If anyone has any questions please contact us, and you can ask for me personally.

Thanks for the detailed response.

I was most concerned with the Optix EGT gauge going fritz after 30-45 minutes. Two cases of this, and one of them confirmed that they had indeed wired it correctly.

Thanks again for all the info!

David,

Like I have said in the past, I did not remove this sticker – I know you do not believe it.

Maybe you can explain this: I order the gauge set, it arrives in about 4-5 days, I installed the next day, and call you on day 7 from the original internet order with this problem. Why on earth would I remove this sticker in less than 24 hours of it being installed on the truck?? What do I have to gain? There is another reason this sticker was missing, but I am sure we will never know why.

You were given a phone call to try and help with the problem. I was directed to Dannin which I spoke with again today. I do believe they will be sending a replacement now. I have been 4 months without a pyrometer. Surely there was a better way to handle this situation.

I don't know. All I know is that the manuf. said it was missing. At any rate, I have spoken with them several times regarding your situation. They should have sent you a replacement sooner, and for that I am sorry. I had asked them to do so and they said they would. Unfortunatley we can't control how fast any particular manufacturer handles their warranties. Some other manufacturers allow for a little more leeway. For instance - if it were another brand, they would have sent out a replacement asap, no questions asked. Or they would have had us do so, depending on how close you were to us. Other manufacturers require you to send the gauge back to them to evaluate it and find out what is wrong. In these circumstances we want the customer to send it back direct so that the turnarround time is less. Also, your particular problem with the pyro we had never heard before, so we thought it best that you explain to them what was happening rather than have you tell us, we relay the message to them, they ask us some more questions, we call you up and ask you, and so forth. Sometimes it's faster to go direct. Also, they may, at their descretion, repair it. If we had sent you a new replacement gauge off the shelf, we could wind up with a repaired gauge comming back to us that we couldn't sell. We do not sell used or referb. gauges.
