Finally got my gauges in. Drove around for the day to see what the norms were. Boost never got above 17 lbs. WOT up a 7% grade and the truck GVW is about 10,500. EGT's maxed at 1200.

K&N in stock box with fender tunnel removed.

After installing the EZ:D :D :D I finally realized what the CTD is all about. (I was Diesel ignorant when I bought it:( ) Just heard good stories.

Anyway after the EZ, Boost went to 18 lbs max. EGT's rose a little 1250 max.

Back to the original question. I thought the wastegate on the HY35 was supposed to dump at 20 LBS. I know from reading here that with just the EZ more boost isn't necessary but was curious if maybe the gauge is off a little (all connections tight, Drilled & tapped horn) or possibly the wastegate is malfunctioning.

I have read the threads on disabling the wastegate or using a spring to adjust it, I'm not sure I want to go there yet. The BOMB bug has bitten and I'm sure after the transmission upgrades that injectors are in the future so I want to make sure. TIA

BWB,

If you disable the waste gate, your EGT reading should drop down to about 1000* and your boost should go up to 28 psi. That was my experience w/ the EZ before I put some BD-1s in. I used the turn buckle method to disable the waste gate. Now I get about 32 psi and about 1100*. I haven't changed anything else yet other than transmission upgrades. I'd disable the waste gate. 17lbs or even 18 lbs does seem quite low. I thought that they were running just over 20 lbs stock. I have a '99, so I don't know how the '01 are for sure.

I would put that boost elbow in that comes with the EZ, if you haven't already.

I know that with the 275 injectors, and the EZ box, I can spike to 29 lbs boost.

Garrett,

I hit 34psi with 275s and EZ. If you have a hard line waste gate I remember there being an easy way to block it with a 22 shell. You should get 18 plus without the EZ. I also remember people talking about defective boxes. If everything looks ok it could be possible that part of the EZ is malfuctioning. Good luck

My 01' with no EZ or wastegate mods would max out at 20psi, sometimes 19. So 18psi, is not WAY off, but it should be higher.

Page 11-8 of the 2001 Service Supplement list the following. :) Wastegate Control Rod Travel for HY35 Turbo @ 144 kPa (20. 8 psi) The HX35 Turbo @ 180 kPa (26 psi). In both cases the movement is 0. 0-1. 6 mm (0. 00-0. 063 in. ) for the Rod. I would think that what you would be concerned with is the spring pressure in the waste gate for the development of boost. Anyway, as you can see, the pressures are 20. 8 and 26 depending on turbo type. :D

I had the trailer hooked up this past weekend and I almost spiked at 30. Putting a load on the truck will make a difference. Your numbers are what I used to see stock.

turn buckle method

R Annestis,

If you are installing an EZ or similar fueling box, then the turn buckle method is an easy way to go. If you haven't installed a fueling box or boost module, then it's not a good idea to disable your waste gate. Others w/ a lot more experience that me have said that completely disabling the waste gate is not a good idea. So, keep that in mind.

Go to the hardware store (I got mine at Lowe's)and get a turn buckle w/ 4. 5"-6. 5" of range. You may also need a small s-hook. You will also need a 1/4" nut to act as a lock nut. Turn buckles have reg. and reverse threaded hooks. Determine which hook is the reg thread and install the 1/4" nut on that threaded hook. Remove your intake duct from the air cleaner to the turbo for access. I suggest doing this while the truck is cool. Hook one side of the turn buckle to the arm of the waste gate and the other hook or hook and S-hook to any part on the turbo waste gate diaphram bracket. Snug it up. Don't over do it. Tighten the lock nut. Your done. You'll see once you get in there.

tmacc:

The economy has the EZ on hold, but I'm in the process of getting guages and installing them. I thought maybe I could get a little more power in the mean time by disabling the waste gate, but I guess not. Just curios, but why does it matter if you have a box or not? More air=better, right?(at least that's what I thought. )

Anyway, thanks for the info. It'll get put to use when I can get overtime again, whenever that will be.

Ron,

Installing gauges first is a very good idea, as if it hasn't been preached enough on TDR. If you disable the waste gate w/o using a boost module, (EZ has a built in boost module)it will set the check engine light on the dash as well as set a code for over boost in the ECM. Practical Solutions has a boost module for about $150. This allows your to disable the waste gate w/o setting any codes, thereby reducing the chance that the dealer will know what your up to since the boost module can be removed before taking your truck into the dealer for any reason.

Check Carl's site at wwcd2.com He usually has some deals from various venders. I got my EZ from Advanced Diesel Technolgies out of Pittsburgh. They also usually have some deals on Carl's site. Good folks to deal w/.

In the diesel world to make power you have to add both air + fuel. You can just add fuel but then you'll be limited by your EGT's on how you use it. You can add just air and it will lower EGT's but "Shouldn't" make a difference in power, might actually hurt it slightly, too much air not enough fuel. Yes more air equal better when added with fuel.

I'm aware that more air requires more fuel to really make a big difference. That makes perfect sense. I'm also aware that the air/fuel ratio can be fine tuned for the best performance at all rpm's. That's what all these boxes are about. As diesel technology advances, and things like common rail injection pumps and pilot injection become more commonplace, more and more electronics will be required to bomb our trucks.

tmacc: Good point. I should have known that. The whole point of getting just the EZ at this point is to NOT void my warranty. I think I'll wait to get the boost module that's already in the EZ. I decided to go with SPA guages since I'm a digital nut. I'm sure you know they're not cheap.

Thanks, -Ron
