Gauge Lights Not Working???

Where to find a Tach setup

For a total of $146. for parts. I think it is high. They still have not looked at a first gen yet. All they did was to find some off the shelf parts and throw high prices on them.

We have a PCM that throws a perfectely good tach signal. How hard would it be to make a converter box to change the signal over to the square wave?

If I wanted to go to add on magnets and a sensor. I would just run down to the local Curby Risk electrical supply house and get a Omeron 12Volt magnetic pickup and then to the local hardware store for the magnets. The wiring is nothing I couldn't do in my sleep.

The solution they are giving I think is "BS".

BSchwarzli the line between two pods would be small. The AutoMeter pods are good construction and they fit the 1st gen pillars good. You wouldn't notice the line.

I have said it before and I will say it again... we can use an off the shelf 10,000 rpm autometer tach and an 8,000 one too. I have the instructions on how to do it. It is very easy and uses the factory tach harness that is in everyone of our trucks.

Doc have you tried a gasser tack on your truck?

I have two in my garage. Both will not work on the 5 volt signal that our PCM puts out. What models are you using that will work on the 5 volt signal. I have a Autometer and a older Sun super tack.

I talked to my brother in law this last weekend. He has the parts for a conversion box. He just hasn't thrown it all together yet.

Yes they ar all I own as I drag race a car too. I will check the model number of the 8,000 rpm one but the 10,000 is an Autometer Part # 3901

Just like this one... .

Finally rounded up the dough to purchase my guages. Since I have a '93, I'm going to go the easy route, and get Isspro gauges since I can use the factory tach plug-in under the dash. Went out to Isspro's new web page and found the following part numbers:

Tach: R8501 (3k) or 8503 (4k)

Tach install kit: R8912-92

Boost: R5623R (60 psi)

Pyro: R605 or R607G (w/ color)

Trans temp: ???? couldn't find one

Question 1: Is this what you guys with Isspro are running? If not, do you have your part numbers available so I can look at the gauge on-line?

Thanks

Download the catalog from ISSPRO's web site, then look in it for oil temp gages, etc.

I use the 8503, the R8912-92, the 30psi boost gage, and the R607G. For Trans temp, I use the R8959 sender and the R9055 gage (see catalog).

I've forgotten where I found the 3-gage pod. The 4th gage is in a donut mount stuck into the ash tray grip (kluge, works). I'm going with another trans temp gage soon, so I'll find another 3-gage pod for the left side of the dash.

Would you be willing to share those instructions with us??? I would love to use the VDO tach I purchased but could not get it to work as the signal from our PCM wouldn't trigger it hooked up as a standard gasser tach to the PCM signal. Thank you,

I wrestled with all this last year. I ended up going the easy route and got the Issopro that plugs in under dash, used the green condoms to match the other guages.

Since the 2nd gen steering cover pod didn't work, the good folks at PDR (where I ordered my tach) found a low profile Issopro bullit that sits where the 2nd gen pod would have. I can see up to 80mph too and everything else just as well.

While waiting for the mount to come in I layed the tach in multiple locations but felt that the steering cover was best. From the driver's position it looks just like my 2 guage dash pod (with dual Westachs: egt, boost and transmission temp + soon to be oil temp), but from the side it is obviously a bullit. Right now it is held down with big black zip ties in case I decided to relocate but after living with it all year I think I like it there fine. I'll try to post a picture tonight.

Only complaint is that occassionally at startup the tach is lazy but finally wakes up and then all is well. Cool to see what the engine is turning in relation to the other guages!

Okay, on to mounting kits. I'd love the tach to fit in a steering column pod. I see Autometer lists a PN 15012 single 2 1/16 column pod, but its listed for '94 - '02 (except '02 1500). My column on my '93 looks very similar (if not identical) to the columns in the '94 trucks. Would this fit? Anybody tried it yet?

The rest of the gauges I believe will go into a 3 guage pod that sits on top of the dash. Any recommendations for a nice dashtop pod?

I want to have my data straight so I can start calling on vendors and get these on order ASAP.

Thanks

Phillip dont forget us when you get the converter box and if anybody knows or comes up with how to use the Autometer 2967 Tach please share with us, I was going to get the Isspro and now found it doesn't fit the steering column mount so I'm stuck on what to do, I dont want anything bigger tham 2 1/16th so it will match the gauges or that size anyways.

I haven't forgot. I am just waiting for my brother in law to get it finished.

I am driving around with a steering column pod and nothing in it. I pitched that Isspro I had.

Dan

I went to the us gear web page and cant find any pods on their pages. Do you happen to have a link to the page showing the pod's.

Thanks

There are two MFG's of gage pods. One is Pro Pods the other is Autometer.

If your talking about a A pillar mount the Autometer is a better setup than the Pro Pods is. The Pro Pods has the gages angled up at a steep angle. It makes it hard to see the gages at night. The Autometer is a better pod for the A pillar.

For a steering column mount Autometer makes a single gage mount for a 94 to 2002 model. Most 92 and 93 trucks use the same steering column setup so you can use the 94 + model on it.

phillip you using z-series boost and EGT or someone elses? I kinda like that Isspro EGT that changes the colors in the backface as you get hotter, but I dont know about Isspro I've always had Autometer stuff in my cars and I have nothing to complain about on them, except obviously we need a D#$N adapter for their tach on these first Gens, dang it!

Here are the pictures (I think- this is the first time I've done this) of my R5503 Issopro tach in a 7602 bullet cup, mounted on the steering column.

Doc is right. We talked autometer years ago and they told us to set it on the 4cyl. signal. No problems. Keep in mind, these are all 5" tachs. I don't know if the smaller ones are different? Wouldn't think so. I just put one in my new '93. Get a test light and check the factory plug. One black wire is your keyed hot wire. The other black is ground. The blue wire is your tach signal. And the orange wire is your power wire for your light.

I am using the AutoMeter Sport Comp line of gages. They match our stock gages real close. The Autometer tach I have is a 2697. It doesn't like the 5 volt reference signal my PCM puts out.

Now my thoughts on this problem. The tach issue seems to be a hit and miss on these years of trucks. I am wondering if the people that get a gasser tach to work have a "loose" PCM that is putting out more than a 5 volt signal out. Some of you guys throw a digital volt meter on your output and let use know what voltage your seeing. I'll bet your around 7 volts or higher. Which most tacks can read a signal that low. Most gasser ing systems use a ballest wire or resistor on the to drop voltage to 9 volts. This is on points based systems. Most of the electronic ing systems were pure 12 volt.

I also have a brand new 20 year old Sun Super tach that will not read a 5 volt signal.

Geez, sorry I missed this one... .

When I bought mine they weren't listed on the website either - I had to call to order them. Might be worth checking to see if they still have them around. :)
