I have a 1998 12valve and I do a lot of towing a 5thw. I have been told that I should install some gauges.

What gauges would you recomend and also would you have them on the dash or on the post?

Also what kind of cost are we talking about.

Any input would be great

This POLL is a bit dated but it might be a good place for you to start. View the poll results, then perform a search here on the TDR for each gauge manufacturer that interests you. Searching on "Gauge" itself will provide you with months worth of reading. Gauge purchase is very much a personal preference.

Good Luck,

Bill

Well, since you don't have a profile filled out on your truck, it's hard to say what to recommend. If your truck is an auot, I would say, boost, EGT and transmission temp. If not I would say jsut EGT and boost are the most crucial.

EGT (Exhaust Gas Temp) Pre Turbo for monitoring high turbo temps - Extends Turbo life

EGT (Exhaust Gas Temp) Post turbo (OPTIONAL) for monitoring cool down temps before shutting down - Extends Turbo life

Boost (Turbo) Helps to diagnose problems such as loose hoses causing loss of power, etc... (also fun to watch :D )

Trans Temp (coming out of trans to cooler) - Trans life, a "must have" if towing with an automatic trans

FP (Fuel Pressure) Post Filter for monitoring filter and lift pump life which is preventative for extending injector pump life

FP (Fuel Pressure) Pre Filter (OPTIONAL) for monitoring filter life

A-Pillar or Dash is personal preference

3 gauge w/ mount setup will run in the $450 ballpark

6 gauge w/ mount setup will run in the $700 ballpark

Many of the dealers listed HERE sell gauges.

As lmills noted, filling out your profile will enable members to provide you with better information.

If you have a 98 12V and have not added any power modifications, you might not need to add gauges.

If you want the gauge info, then put in an EGT/Boost combo gauge (Geno's - Westach).

Even with stock trucks, your EGT can be too high for proper shutdown. I've seen EGT's over 450 (pre turbo) degrees after going up a steep hill and pulling into a parking lot (not towing anything; 25MPH). This is too hot for shutting down. The boost gauge can tell you if you have a boost problem.

You don't need a FP gauge, but if you have an auto, then a transmission temp gauge would be useful, especially while towing. Have fun... :)
