QUOTE: PPaul: "Nothing against you DMosby but these trucks were out for a year before you bought yours. . so you had every opportunity to look at all the complaints against these trucks. . you should not have been surprised by the emission problems. "

think the emission system is more than a problem - most problems can be fixed - more of a permanent defect

these trucks were out for 1/2 a year 07. 5 model

and if the buyer is at fault for lack of "research" on their part CERTAINLY some fault lies with the seller & manufacturer of the legendary cummins..... all I ever remember reading was about the power/torque, milage, longevity, 40% fewer parts to cause problems vs the competition, higher resale value, what could be better? - real research unfortunately came after that first CEL.

can still hear the tech, in a not so pleasant tone telling me "these trucks were meant to be WORKED" at my 1st CEL & reflash at month 2 of ownership... all my fault for not driving it right. Guess I should be glad I didn't fork over the coin for a mercedes or bmw suv with a diesel - yikes.

well let me tell you why i bought a diesel and traded in my gas:

i ordered a 02 chevy silverado: 1500,ext cab, 4wd with 4. 10 gears... why well i wanted a bigger truck then my last s10, 4. 10 gears because it would help with towing, 1500 because who needs a 3/4 or 1 ton.

after 118000 miles on the chevy i started to realize that i was not getting all that great of gas mileage (12mpg)and after towing a skid steer twice found out that the rear springs were shot.

now i have a 3500 crew cab with more power then i need but it is there when i need it. can i tow a skid steer, yea a couple. and mileage well pardon me if i don't cry about 16mpg with all that horrible emission crap. sure it would be nice to get better fuel mileage but i have a warranty and i like that. so for now that crap stays on.

do i tow with my truck, unfortunately not yet(i am waiting for that day:-laf) but i drive it like i drove my chevy: 5gear in the dodge at 1700-1900rpms and occasionally i find a highway to "burn out the carbon". i dove the chevy in 3rd gear at 50mph. hard... no but made sure it was in the power and not loafing. . is the 6. 7 a bad motor?... NO... do you drive it like it is ment to be driven?... NO... so don't be surprised when you find out the truck and owner don't match... . i have a 03 yamaha R6 and it doesn't like anything lower then 8000rpms so i don't ride it like that.

anyone reading this and thinking about buying a diesel should really consider why they want one and if they really NEED one.

sorry for the long post. i just get tired of people complaining about how bad this engine is when maybe it has something to do with the way they use it. also on a side note i have had no problems with my 6. 7 other then the rear main seal was going out. . but i knew that when i bought it used and had them fix it before i took it home.

Thank you, Paul for an excellent post. Very well stated!

I agree with you completely.

It is illegal to do the EGR and DPF deletes, which is why NO shop will perform the deletes without you signing a statement saying that you're using the truck for off-road competition use only.

Gee and I thought that I was a risk taker when I had the muff shop put in a CAT test pipe :-laf Ill stick with my stock O4. 5

If I load a gun and you shoot and kill someone with it am I guilty of murder?

You could be found guilty as an accomplice, but what does that have anything to do with the discussion at hand? The simple fact is that the emissions equipment is a FEDERAL mandate, and the EPA enforces the federal law regarding emissions equipment. They CAN go after the shop that performed the work as well as the owner of the vehicle.

When I bought my '86 W250, I took it to a local muffler shop to have them remove the dual blown-out, rusty cherry bombs and put a new Y pipe feeding a single 3" flowmaster with 3" pipe out the back on. They refused to do the work unless I had cats put in. Granted, that was in an area where emissions testing was done, but how would anyone know who did the work? They told me that they could be fined $10k for working on it without installing cats.

It turns out they were wrong, in 1986 a HD truck with a gross weight over 8500 pounds didn't come from the factory with any cats.

Anyway, IF the EPA were to look into it, the business is at risk.

Your statement is not inaccurate but in many regions of the US auto emissions, emissions controls, and emission control inspections are not very important to the overall routine of life. Out here in rural west Texas where we enjoy wide open spaces and a breeze is always blowing and we have very few liberals blowing hot air auto exhaust emissions are not something we pay much time or attention to.

I looked into the emissions requirements of FL prior to moving here - it was somewhat of a prereq. California was crossed off the list of a very good reason. :)

However, the feds seem to have a budget shortfall and this seems like a good way for them to make up some money in a pinch. A smart business owner would cover his/her butt.
