what gear to tow with.

Overnight Parking at Wal-Mart

I have a 1999 4x4 Quad cab with a six speed and 3. 54 rear end. The manual does not list GCWR for manual and 3. 54 rear end. I am also wondering if there is any difference between a 5 speed transmission and a 6 speed transmission as far as GCWR.

Anybody know?

The Gross Combined Weight Rating was on the window sticker of my model year 2000 Ram. The sales brochure also included a listing (with errors) of GCWR's.

The sales brochure for model year 1999 does not list the 6-speed transmission. A 4X4 quad cab 5-speed 2500 or 3500 has a GCWR of 20,000 lbs. unless first sold in California. California-sold vehicles with manual transmissions have the same GCWR as A/T equipped trucks: 18,000 lbs. with 4. 10 gears and 16,000 lbs with 3. 54 gears.

I can't tell you what the GCWR is. I can only tell you what the

tow rating is,as listed in the Trailer Life magazine.

Ram 2500 5. 9 CTD 14,300#. Requires either a 3. 5/3. 9/ 4. 09/

4. 10 axle ratio, Club cab rating slightly lower. Requires

manual 5/6-speed transmission. The rating for ,Calif. vehicles

may differ. This is the 1999 tow rating. :D :D

I wouldn't think there would be any difference between a 5spd or 6spd, but none of this weight rating stuff makes sense to me anyhow. On my 99 5spd, the sticker said GCWR was 16000lbs. Didn't believe that so looked in my owners manual. You're right, manual doesn't provide anything for my transmission/rear end configuration. After much TDR discussion, I finally called DC, gave them my VIN#. They told me my GCWR was 20,000lbs. Said they would send me something, but never did. Too late, my GCVW is right at about 19600. I have absolutely no problems pulling or stopping!

Thanks for the info guys. I found your post interesting BigMike. I have been looking at a 33TS cardinal without the two toco's myself. Interesting to see you are pulling it with the same truck I have. I need to get an exhaust brake though.

Definitely need an exhaust brake, especially up here in the Northwest. Lots of steep grades to climb and come back down!!
