I just read on another Dodge Cummins related site that Cummins shops are using a special tool to remove cam gear instead of pulling the cam. They than reheat it and re install. Sound possible or like an accident waiting to happen?? My gearcase is being replace on Thursday I wonder if shop will use this method. ?

It would not worry me. Back in my mis-spent youth, my dad and I built better part of 100 VW air cooled engines. The cam drive gear on the crank is pressed on. Standard procedure was to put the front crank bolt in the vise, heat the brass distributor drive gear and then heat the steel cam drive gear. Normally you never had to hit it, just heat it up and CLANK.

Our engines were known to run long and hard. (as far as an aircooled VW can) :D
