Clutch Problem

Im lost! Need other diesel head opinions

Been having a few issues with my 2006 recently, I just did the front main seal and power steering pump, degreased the engine for probably the 6th time and did a bit of driving. When I got back home and popped the hood, I noticed oil again at the top front of the engine. I pulled the cooling fan mount about an hour ago and after I cleaned it and ran it again, I saw some oil splashing up between the gear case and the block! Upon closer inspection I noticed that about 4 inches of gasket was missing (pic attached). Any idea what could have caused this? I realize that I am going to have to pull everything in front of the engine again at some point to replace the gasket, but according to this post I should be able to get by for a bit with RTV, any comments? https://www.turbodieselregister.com...ng-should-i-do-a-cam-too.225835/#post-2331228

Yep, typical problem. Cover expands and contacts at different rate than block and it tears the gasket which then disappears and you get oil leaks you swear are front main. Clean it, RTV it, and let it dry. Mine has been running 5+ years like that with no leaks.

I've taken all of the steps you suggested already, I guess I'll just hope that the RTV holds on my truck as well!

Mine developed alittle oil leak on that gasket to, i was be able to re torque 2/3 of the gearcase covers bolts, no leak since then.
Mine had a whole section of the gasket missing, so I don't think any amount of torque would have stopped it, but the RTV seems to have done the trick...

Absolutely, my experience fits more to people that just have a seeping oil problem, dont wait till the gasket fells into pieces.

Yours was way to late to be rescued.

I did an entire article about this in the TDR magazine. RTV works. Lasted forever. I had to remove the fan mount casting from the front of the engine to find it. About a 1" section of the gasket was missing. Too much work to replace the gasket. You would have to either pull the cam or remove the cam gear. Clean it really good with brake cleaner or 2+2. Use oil resistant RTV. Push it in there with your finger and smear it generously around the entire area. Normally you would get laughed at for doing this but the truth of the matter is this is only splash pressure. Lasted forever. You can see the missing gasket in the second pic.

Ozy, I don't have any leaks on the gear case cover yet! Is this common on the 5.9? Going to check the cover bolt torque.....do you know the torque spec for the bolts?
