can someone educate me to the cost and what is involved in a gear swap on an 01 2500 with 70 and 60 axles? any shops in the south east that are recomended? thanks

Can't help you with dealers, but cost for just an R&P change is probably right around $1000-$1200 for both axles installed. I'm sure shops vary, but parts will probably run $500-600 plus any additional cost for limited slips/lockers/etc.

If I remember correctly, to change gears from 3. 54 to 3. 9, you will have get a different carrier also. I think the gear split is 3. 73 on both axles.

Brian, I have looked up some info in my Spicer spec books and I hope this will help you on your gear change. The Dana 60 has a case split between 4. 10 to 4. 56 and the same goes for a Dana 70. You may want to look at the aftermarket for the "thick" gears that can be used on the lower (numerically) ratio cases. The aftermarket may offer more ratio choices. I like the Spicer OEM ring and pinions myself but your cost will be more expensive because of the carrier change needed. I agree with MJawsman on the cost of the swap as I was the r&r guy for a driveline shop and those prices sound correct.

As far as Spicer gears go, I don't think the 3. 90's are available for the 60 or 70. The smaller Dana 44 has a 3. 90 available and the case split is between 3. 73 and 3. 90.

When looking for a place to get this done in your area, my advice is to ask around for a reputable shop. A lot of mechanics say they can do the job but very few understand how to set up gears correctly and make them last without noise. Word of mouth is the best advertisement for the shop that does your work. Good luck and I hope this helps.
